Did you know that "How are you?" is not a real question? In America, people make "small talk" with their friends, classmates, coworkers, and even strangers. This usually starts with asking, "How are you?" But, if you answer honestly, people will be surprised. People typically ask each other "How are you?" and respond with "Good, you?" before continuing the conversation, even if they are having a bad day!

It's important to ask and answer questions to seem friendly in America. If someone says "How are you?", you have to ask them, too! Also, questions like "Are you married?", "Do you have any kids?", and "Where do you live?" are normal and polite. If you visit America, please feel free to make friendly small talk with anyone, and don't forget to smile!
