Term: Density

Definition: The amount of mass per unit volume. In our experiment, hot water is less dense than cold water, which creates visible patterns when the two are combined.

Definition: The difference in heat energy between hot and cold water causes molecules to move differently, resulting in convection and diffusion effects.

Term: Atmospheric Pressure

Definition: The force exerted by the weight of the atmosphere. It helped us hold a card against an upside-down water-filled bottle without spilling it, demonstrating how pressure supports objects against gravity.

Definition: The movement within fluids caused by temperature and density differences. This caused the colored warm water to rise and mix in specific ways with the cold water.

Observation

Students made predictions and observed how the colored water behaved and how air pressure played a role in the setup, deepening their understanding of fluid dynamics and pressure.

Balloon Blow-Up: A Yeast and Sugar Reaction

Term: Fermentation
Definition: A biological process where yeast breaks down sugars to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide. In our experiment, this gas inflated the balloon.

Definition: An invisible gas released during fermentation. It gradually filled the balloon as yeast digested the sugar.

Definition: The process of "waking up" dry yeast. Warm water helped activate the yeast to begin fermentation.

Definition: Sugar served as the yeast’s food. Adding sugar cubes provided the energy yeast needed to start producing gas.
