Scaffolding Instruction- Scaffolding instruction is the building on knowledge over time. First grade is often the time in students' development when they show signs of struggling with reading comprehension. Scaffolding instruction promotes deeper engagement, comprehension of reading concepts, the ability to summarize ideas, make valid predictions, and clearly think aloud.

Cooperative Learning- "Cooperative learning is the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other’s learning" (TeachThought, 2017, para. 5). First graders can utilize these groups as resources to help them build on their understanding of reading concepts which will eventually lead them to becoming independent readers and overall learners.

KWL Charts- KWL Charts allow the students to use their prior knowledge to engage in the new learning that will take place. KWL charts are beneficial for first grade readers learning to read independently because it helps scaffold their prior knowledge with their understanding of the new lesson.

(TeachThought, 2017)

TeachThought Staff.

Guided Reading Groups

Attached is a demonstration of a guided reading group conducted by Mrs. Kardos, a first grade teacher. In guided reading groups, teachers seek to group students based on their reading ability. In these groups, the students are given literacy that aligns with their abilities as the teacher reviews the literacy with them step by step. Guided reading groups are important to beginner readers because they address the students' individual needs and creates a learning space for them to be able to grow academically (Williams, n.d.).

Lawrence, A.

Story Sequencing Activity

Story sequencing involves the students describing the events of a story, the characters of the story in a clear, concise manner, and using their creativity to share the events of a story that they read first in a small group and then individually to improve comprehension. This concept is important for young readers because it provides them the opportunity to share their thoughts of a story with peers before gaining the information for themselves.

https://www.education.com/activity/article/fix_that_story_first/

Think-Pair-Share Activity (Turn and Talk) Formative Assessment)

When the first grade class finishes a book, the teacher can use the think-pair-share strategy to check their comprehension (formative assessment). As a class, have the students discuss the five Ws (who, what, when, where, and why) to understand all parts of the story. As a group, have the students discuss who their favorite character was and why. Ask them, "What if you changed the plot of the story? What would happen if...?" (Crowling, n.d.). This expands their thinking and allows them to build on their understanding.

Crowling, T.K. (n.d.). How to use the think-pair-share activity in the classroom. Hey Teach!
