  • Incorporating growth mindset into classrooms is a matter of equity. We must teach our students to believe in themselves. We need to believe in them too!
  • I must emphasize the importance of the process of learning to my students. The learning and growth happens along the way, and the struggle needs to be celebrated.
  • The way in which I speak to my students is incredibly important. Even by just using the word “yet” I am telling them that they will get to where they want to be and that I believe in them.

    2.  Over time the system converts kids from Growth to Fixed mindsets.  Well intentioned adults can still do harm, and our school system does harm when it promotes a fixed mindset within our students.  Every time we deny kids the ability to improve, every time we tell them to move on to the next topic even though they aren't ready yet, every time we promote good grades over valuing mistakes, we do harm.  That has to stop.

    3. Process > Product. No matter how much we learn about growth mindset, we will always need to be working on our skills to approach each situation with a growth mindset. It is a lifelong process, just like learning!
    2. The power of the word “yet” in grading. I’m still in awe on how a small word change can lead to students feeling hopeful and proud of their learning instead of disappointed and frustrated. In my district we use the word progressing, but “not yet” would be so much easier for students and parents to grasp. It shows the potential that I know their children have. 
    3. We need to change the words we use to praise students. Instead of saying “you’re so smart” we need to acknowledge the effort they put in. This is something that I’m still working on. I’ll catch myself praising the end result, since that’s what has been modeled my entire life. This is one of the first things I’m going to talk with my new student teacher about this fall.

    2) The words of a teacher can be extremely powerful in helping kids foster a growth mindset or extremely detrimental in fostering a fixed mindset.  We need to be careful in how we use our words.  Praising students for "being so smart" is very different than "great job on working hard at this and not giving up."

    3) We need to believe that all students are able to learn and we need to try our best to ensure that our students believe this too. I think we can too often lose our patience with some students wondering if they will ever understand a concept. If they sense our frustration, that will bring them right back to a fixed mindset.   • Research shows that many teachers still have a very traditional fixed mindset about intelligence even as they feel students can easily change their effort, attitude, and behavior.
