Terra Nullius

Cause:

In 1788 Captain Cook arrived in Botany Bay and claimed this land was terra-nullius. This means there were no people living here even though of course, the Aboriginals had been here for over 60,000 years.

Effect:

This resulted in Aboriginals and British settlers having a fight and arguing about who owned the land an argument which continues today.

Aborigines Protection Board

Cause:

In 1883, NSW gave the Aborigines Protection Board the power to take away Aboriginal kids from their families for any reason, at any time.

Effect:

This led to lots of Aboriginal kids being taken away from their parents for no reason. This wrecked families and disconnected Aborigines from their land, culture and language.

In the late 1800s, people started discussing bringing together the individual colonies and creating one country. New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and Victoria all operated as individual colonies under British rule. Federation did happen in 1901 when we united to become the Commonwealth of Australia. But led to immigration and other Non-British people being excluded.

Freedom Ride

Cause:

In 1965 a group of uni students from Sydney University went around Australia to prove that Aborigines were not being treated equally. During there trip they found a situation that prove there point, an Aboriginal family not even allowed in the local pool.

Effect:

This led to Aboriginal rights, about their safety and that they should be treated and allowed to do the things that a normal Australian citizen can.

White Australia Policy

On 23rd of December 1901, the Refugee Laws came into place. This was formed to reduce non British people being allowed to come and live in Australia. This became the White Australia Policy which went through until 1973.

Assimilation Policy

Cause:

The Government wanted to get rid of dark skinned people and make everyone white like British people. Their plan was to "breed" out Aboriginal people until they were white this meant that Aboriginal people were now only allowed to marry white people.

Effect:

This lead to lots of kids being taken away from there parents because they had to be raised as a white person, Learning the rights and wrongs. These kids were called half-caste and were found around the state and taken away from their parents.

1967 Australian Referendum to amend the constitution

In 1967 there was a referendum - yes or no. This was about Aboriginal rights, rights to vote and rights to take part of public events and be joined in the census. This had a massive impact as more than %70 of Australia voted yes now Indigenous people had normal Australian rights.

1966 Wave Hill Walk Off

In 1966 the Aboriginal workers at Wave Hill were sick of how they were being treated, that they originally owned the land they were be enslaved on and their working hours, so they went on strike. They ran away into the forest and refused to work. This resulted in lots of Australians fighting for Aboriginal land as they originally owned it.

1972 Aboriginal tent embassy

In the morning of 26 January 1972 you could see 4 men under a beach umbrella arguing about Australian Aboriginal land rights. They stayed out there for hours out the front of the parliament house in Canberra. Later, lots more people came and helped the protest this became a very big step towards the Australia we live in now today, you can even still see the van today.

Handing Back Uluru

Cause:

In 1985 when the Government of N.T. gave the land of Uluru back to the traditional owners. It was huge in aboriginal peoples rights and made even a lot of non-aboriginal people happy and glad.

Effect:

This led to people not being able to touch or climb it it was now claimed "sacred land" this was a huge step for aboriginal people because now they had more land back of which they originally owned, another step to getting Australia back.
