This is my first year in newspaper. I am a writer and a staff
photographer. I love to write A&E articles—mostly about art.I hope I will
be able to play volleyball for the rest of my life. I play at Texas Fury
volleyball club and on 132 Impact. I played this year as a Lady Jag on A-team
as outside hitter. I have an obsession with cats and four of them live in my
room. My favorite movies are Pitch Perfect and any scary movie! When I’m not on
the court, I’m usually found with my good friend. My hobbies include getting my
nails done and playing with my pets.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

French repousse turns metal into art

Repousse is a French word for “pushed up”. Turning metalworking into a
malleable metal is referred to as repousse. Some say this art form began in the
third century BC.Repousse’s are generally carved from copper, metal, gold, and silver and with various tools. A great place to find techniques is India. You can make a vase or
water container. In Ms. Fowler’s seventh grade art classes, the students work on their
repousse by using special tools to carve into metal. The students start out by
carving the design of their choice into a metal sheet that adds tactile
texture.Once the carving is finished, you spread ink called “Indian Ink” over the
metal carving.Wait two to three minutes and then dab or pull ink off of the carving to add value. When the Indian ink is dry, the students can place the carving on a blank
black sheet of paper. They continue with the design by repoussing the black
sheet of paper which adds implied texture. The finishing touches include
metallic colors.

They begin by finding a model in a magazine that has facial proportions large enough to draw. Next the photo is cut right down the middle of the face. The artists tape the left half of the face on the left side of the project paper and vice versa with the right. They draw the other half of the left side of the face onto the project paper and vice versa. It’s like using a mirrored affect when drawing the face. Once this part is finished the students shade in the left half to add value and color to the right half of the face using pastels to make it look like a completed face. Joaquin Waymire said, “The nose and eyes details are definitely the hardest on this project!”<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

In Ms. Fowlers seventh grade art class the students used linoleum blocks, ink, and very sharp tools to create their masterpiece. The students had a choice of black, pink, yellow and teal inks and a wide variety of paper choices. Emily Wright said,” I love this project! It’s hard to carve on the linoleum blocks, but after that it becomes very easy!” First the students make a drawing of what they want the linoleum block to look like. Then they carve out the drawing on their linoleum blocks. Once they have carved everything out the students make an artist proof which is black ink on white paper, then two black inks on colored paper, then two colored ink on colored paper, and finally a free print. “I made a flapper girl. She wears a feather dress and a feather on her head.” After the project is finished all prints the students write their name on the bottom right corner and A/P on the artist proof, 1/5 and 2/5 on the black inks on colored paper, 3/5 and 4/5 on the two colored inks on colored paper, and 5/5 on the free print. Kat Gains said, “I like the free print the most because it’s the prettiest of all my prints!”
