The book Look Both Ways is written by Jason Reynolds. The book revolves around a bunch of short stories put together in one book and storyline. A lot of these stories portray how vital friendship is in everyones life.

In the story "Water Booger Bears," Jason Reynolds writes "Her parents thawed by one and only TJ who would up crack some jokes, break some ice" (Reynolds 8 ). This shows how she felt sad and awkward around her parents who were divorcing and TJ helped with some of that. She also was sick sick which probably helped keep her mind off the pain. Not only, He would leave "friendship flags" to show that he cared about her.

In the story "The Low Cuts Strike Again" Jason Reynolds writes "That was the last John John Trey spoke before Bit's fist went in his mouth"(Reynolds 24). This shows how Bit is more than willing to protect his friends when they get made fun of. They did this because they became close friends by being able to bond over the fact their parents have cancer. This is also another reason because they were able to become friends from something bad to becoming friends that help and support each other.

A great character that we learn more about is Bit. This is because we go to seeing him as an aggressive thief to someone who is struggling with their mom with cancer and someone who will protect their friends. This is shown with the quote in The Low Cuts Strike Again where Jason Reynolds writes "Seconds later, Bit's mother, Ms Burns, came from the back and was greeted by all of them-the Low Cuts- holding cups of fresh ice cream"(Reynolds 39). This shows how much he cares about his mom.

Reynolds uses a lot of humor to show who and why the characters say and do what they do. An example is how in "Five Things Easier" to do Than Simeon's and Kenzi's secret Handshake where Simeon says "Kenzie here has a big heart. But that big heart happens to be in a small body." (Reynolds 45). This quote shows how both of the friends are able to get along and use humor to make each other happy. They also show how the characters humor is a big part of both of their lives. It just shows how important friendship is by using humor as a part of the big picture.

From what we have seen today we get to see what friendship can be. Lots of people have struggles and have friends help them through it. Or some people find who they are just by getting a friend and learning humor, a new sense of joy. These stories portray how vital friendship truly is in everyones life. Wether it be Helping each other in a tough situation or just being funny.
