<title>RESPECT: Respect is the counselor’s ability to demonstrate a genuine caring and acceptance of the client as a person. Respect is unconditional in that it is not contaminated by evaluation or judgment of clients’ or others’ feelings, thoughts, or behavior as good or bad. The counselor must value and accept the client without placing stipulations on the acceptance. It is not an attitude of “I’ll accept you when,” rather it is one of “I’ll accept you as you are.” The counselor must not judge others as well, as it can imply that at some point the counselor will judge the client. Positive judgment is also disrespectful, as it implies that if client says something the counselor perceives as negative, the counselor will disapprove of that. In short: No judgment, neither negative nor positive, neither of the client nor anyone the client talks about.</title>
