What is it?: Arete means excellence, and the Greeks believed that people should push themselves to be at their best all the time.
How did the Greeks feel about it?: Arete is also one way that the Greeks established legacy, so people would remember them after they died. This was really important to them.
Why is it important?: The Greeks' emphasis on Arete shows they believed that success and achievement were ideal and tightly connected to their individual identities and social status.
Example 1: Orpheus uses his musical talent (arete) to convince Hades to allow Eurydice to leave the Underworld.
Example 2: Zeus' arete is leadership based on reciprocity (mutual relationships).

People will believe that something is either matriarchy or patriarchy
How did the Greeks feel about it?: They felt that it was important to have gender tension because they believe that male or women should really do only certain things.
Why is it important?: this is important because gender tension should not mean that they can only do certain things but they should be seen as equal.
Example 1: "The Rule of Zeus" is saying that he is the ruler of everyone and everything. Why can't a female be a ruler?
Example 2: "The Rule of Uranus" is saying that he was the all-powerful god. Also it was saying that the female didn't have any power what so ever.

What is it?: Very much respect; high esteem.
How did the Greeks feel about it?:

Honor is a show of power among the Greeks, if you're an honorable man you typically have somewhat high power and you always have the utmost respect.
Why is it important?: It is important because honor is one of the greatest legacies you can leave behind with your family. If your father was honorable it left your family with more importance than someone who was dishonorable.
Example 1: Zeus was the god of gods, and although he was not necessarily pure or a good role model, he was honorable, so when he ha kids with Hera, they were automatically more important than some gods on Mt. Olympus, because Zeus was their father.
Example 2: Uranus was not honorable he was the opposite. His thirst for power corrupted his brain and tainted his good intentions. His dishonor and corruptness eventually led to his assassination.
