Beowulf is portrayed as an honorable hero. In the Celtic tradition, there is no afterlife. The only life after death was being remembered by those still living. Because of this, Beowulf is determined to create his legacy. He comes to protect Hrothgar without being asked which seems honorable but it also shows that he is obsessed with becoming a hero, the source of his power. Because he does not want to lose his power by failing to kill the dragon, he attacks it all by himself and gets bit. The poisonous bite kills him but his legacy is intact. He would rather be remembered than alive.
