Individuals are a major contributor to environmental pollution, but can also play a big part in saving the environment. They are responsible for a large portion of environmental pollution, such as air conditioning, vehicle emissions. An individual's desire for meaningless plastic goods has increased the demand for wasteful plastic products which pollute the environment. Individuals can directly impact companies choices through their own choices. by taking the small step to turn down a plastic bag, collectively, it will result in the company cutting down on production of plastic bags. Therefore, as individuals contribute to environmental pollution directly and indirectly, and they should do their part to offset that damage through protecting the environment and preventing further environmental pollution.

Despite numerous climate policies rolled out by governments around the world, for example, the requirement to pay for and obtain a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) in order to have the right to register, own and use a vehicle in Singapore, a large number of Singaporeans own carbon-emitting vehicles. Although there are many companies, restaurants and climate advocates calling for people to stop using plastic bags and plastic straws, I see only barely a handful of people bringing reusable bags when they buy groceries. It is not that companies and governments and not implementing enough policies or taking enough action to protect the environment, but it is the individuals that have not been doing enough. It is not impossible for each and every individual to have awareness on current environmental issues and to take action to stop those issues from deteriorating. One can do a lot to reduce negative impact on our environment, small steps like bringing a reusable bag when buying groceries or taking public transportation when traveling to a certain location. When a government takes action or encourages people to protect the environment, it is almost instantly seen as a political gesture, many people, especially those who are supporters or affiliated with opposition parties may criticise or go against the words of the government. However, when it is an individual effort, there is no political association or any politicisation. When a company raises awareness on climate issues, many people will immediately lash out at them for being self-contradictory, for example, when Saudi oil giant Aramco, released a statement encouraging people to shift to electric cars, they immediately faced backlash due to the environment-damaging oil refineries they owned around the Middle East.
