During independant reading time we first review what my job is and what their job is. My job is to meet with a small group while their job is to read quietly, independantly and they can choose one book at a time. Students will have access to their book bags which are filled with their level books in English and Spanish. These are books we have already read and they are working on. One routine that i would like to implement next year is having easy HFW books available to them.
Ester Allen

This will help the teacher gather data on fluency, accuracy, intonation, and book choice. I do agree that we lack a variety of books in Spanish compare to English. We definitely need to provide an ample variety of books for our bilingual students.
Johanna Franco

The students have a book box where they have books that can read independently, they have aproximately 3 spanish and 3 english ones. My library includes 2 bookshelves, one of them are completely in spanish and the other completely in english, my students have access to them on their centers time whenever they have library center and also free time. They also have access to school library and after reading at a level 14 they can choose a book in english with not many words, as long as they advance in reading they can add another book. I need to improve on my classroom library by adding activities, sentence stems, prompts to do whenever they are there. Lilia Ramirez

To ensure students have access to Spanish and English reading books during independent reading the students can select Spanish stories to read from the adopted reading program or the level books in Spanish. The lack of books at the library in Spanish sometimes impede the students to have access to Spanish literature. Next year I would like to make more time for interactive read aloud.

Teresa Arsiaga

Independent reading happens when I'm working with small group. For independent reading I have color coded baskets with leveled books mostly in Spanish since I teach first grade, each basket has a list of student's name, so that, students know where to choose their books from. I also have separate baskets with only English books that they can choose but I encourage my students to read more Spanish books, especially my low readers. Students read independently by table. Example red table reads a book of choice from their basket, blue table reads independently on Istation, yellow table reads on Razkids independently while I read with the small group in turn. I have a poster with written expectations for students when reading independently. I also have a list of reading responses they can choose from for after reading the text.
Laura Barraza

Independent reading happens many times during the day. In the morning students have their quick warm up, when they finish they start to read their own book. Then, after we go over the warm up, the class and I get 20 minutes of independent reading. Students find their comfortable spot. Students then also read during book club. Students are grouped according to reading level. As a group they get to choose what book they want to read. Students also read whenever they finish an assignment.
