Commitment to the Future--Learning Map May 2022

The very first learning that I engaged in with the MEDL program was the learning map process, so I decided to end my MEDL work at the beginning.

After looking back upon my learning over the past two years, I decided to create a final learning map that demonstrates my newfound strengths and values, which are represented by the thicker arrows, as well as areas for future growth, which are represented by the thinner arrows.

Two years ago I found engaging in this process very cringy and uncomfortable as, being primarily a concrete-sequential learner, I was not a particularly reflective person at the time. After forcing myself to wholly engage in the method and the concept of growth mindset, I knew that the learning that came out of the mapping process would become the seed of my reflective growth over the next two years; additionally, learning maps became the basis of my work in my classroom around self-regulated learning skill development.

The purpose of this padlet was to synthesize my learning for element 5 into a multi-media presentation. You can click on each of the elements to open them for further exploration.

The photograph in the background is one I took last fall on a reflective hike with some of my fellow educators. We engaged in rich conversations about teaching, learning, and equity while admiring the beautiful surroundings.

The photo shows the golden larch trees at Chester Lake in Alberta. Golden larches are a rare kind of deciduous conifer tree that regrows green needles every spring after they are shed the previous fall. In Southern Alberta, they exist at high elevations close to the timberline. They are a rather non-descript evergreen during the spring and summer months but shine through in the fall when their needles change into a beautiful golden yellow. To me, they are a metaphor for my transformative growth over the past two years.

Larches are also interesting because of a distinct mutualistic symbiosis that exists between the larches' roots and some species of mycorrhizal fungi. This reciprocity mirrors the relationships I have built with my students. I have helped them build critical learning skills and they have helped me reflect upon my journey.
