Alfred ‘Freddie’ Knoller was born on 17 April 1921 in Vienna, Austria. Following a series of antisemitic attacks on the Viennese Jewish community in 1938, he left Austria and lived as a refugee in Belgium and France.

Henry was stunned psychologically, he was so afraid of authority because they were very careful about speaking to us, but they were so hungry that they had the courage, and that was such an act of courage. Henry had left austria and was a refugee in Belguim.
