My father experienced school in Mexico. He attended a small school in his community with limited access to many things. They did not have school supplies like notebooks and backpacks things of that sort. They were just taught on a chalk board. They were just the basics like math and reading. They did not have access to any sort of technology.

My grandma experienced school here in Arizona in the 50s. She attended up to 8th grade. The time spent in school she mentioned corporal punishment. She remembers being hit with a ruler by the teacher on her knuckles. She says the teachers were super strict then. She mentioned many teachers would discriminate against children or color.

The school setting in Mexico was nothing like they were here in the 80s. The school setting was just a small school house with desks and board. He mentioned how he never liked it and would always get in trouble. Once he reached the age of 12 he stopped attending school and decided he wanted to work to help out his family. This was common among most of the children. Many experienced hardship so this was seen as a way to help.

My mother continued her education after high school and attended University. This is when she started getting more familiar with technology. She purchased a laptop and became excellent at navigating it. During this time she says it was the normal platforms that we see today. There were not really platforms that we use today especially in education.

I was surprised to learn about my grandmas experience. This was something we never talked about. I enjoyed hearing about her experience in the 50s. We all get to read about the history of education but getting it from someone who lived it and has watched education evolve and how technology made its way in.
