The main difference between the two number talks is that the dot image is kept up for the entirety of the talk during the DOT IMAGE activity. The quick image activity is similar, but gives the children a chance to use quick subitizing skills before the image is reintroduced. Subitizing is a skill developed through practice and repetition.

The Quick Image is just that, quick and only shown for about two seconds. Students then discuss and explain their ideas for subitizing. Then, the imagine is reintroduced. All three help to develop skills through practice and repetition.

After watching the videos we see that the main difference is the amount of time the ten frame was left on the board. The Quick Image displays the image for only 2 seconds as opposed to the other Dot Image being left up as long as needed. I see how both could be helpful in building number sense.

The dot image number talk allowed the students to look at the dots for a longer period of time. Since they looked at it for a longer amount of time, some students may have been able to use more than one strategy to count the dots and think of several ways to group the dots together. The subtilizing activity was only on the board for two seconds. Students had to quickly group the dots to count the whole amount of dots.

The dot image activity gives the students a visual activity to reinforce grouping of dots to help organize adding numbers. The Quick Image activity seems to build on the dot activity in that it goes from more concrete to visual and doing more "mental math".

Students learn number sense and decomposing skills. The quick image is used to practice substizing. The dots are only shown for a few seconds.
