You do not have to be licensed or certified to preform basic dental assistant duties.
Suction, Sterilization, Temp Crown
No education is needed for basic DA duties.

In order to assist in general, ortho, take X-rays, or assist with other expanded functions you need to be certified. Dental that are not certified in an expanded function can instruct patients of OHI, schedule appointments for the patients, and prep/sterilize rooms (etc.). In Oregon there are no specific education or training requirements for dental assistants.

Dental Assistants in Alaska do not require any education, they are trained on the job. Those that are dental assistants can do basic supportive task and procedures like scheduling, suctioning, taking x-rays, and temp crowns.

To just be a practical dental assistant in TN you have to be an employee of a licensed dentist(s) who is receiving practical chairside dental assisting training from a licensed dentist(s) or is a dental assistant student in an educational program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). For RDA or RDA expanded functions there are more qualifications
Practical dental assistants can call in prescriptions to the pharmacist as instructed by the employer/dentist, select and pre-fit stainless steel crowns or other preformed crowns for insertion by the dentist, and perform pulp testing
CODA or chairside training from a dentist

There are 3 options for being a dental assistant in the state of Ohio. The first option is to be a basic qualified personnel. This involves being 18 years+ and being trained directly on the job by the Dentist. The second option is to be a certified dental assistant. The last option is to be an Expanded Function Dental Assistant.
Apply fluoride, OHI instructions, apply sealants with the proper educational and training requirements.
Either be trained on the job or complete and accredited dental assisting program.

You do not need to be licensed or certified to be a dental assistant in Maine.
Although, to perform radiography in Maine, an individual must be licensed as a Dental Radiographer by the Maine Board of Dental Practice (MBDP).
-Receive and prepare patients for treatment, including seating, positioning chair and placing napkin.
-Transfer dental instruments.
-Take and record vital signs.
No education is needed for basic DA duties.

In the state of Texas, it is required to be under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist to perform basic supportive dental procedures such as suctioning, making temp crowns, and apply topical fluoride. In order to perform x-rays, one must be an RDA.
DA's in Texas are able to complete tooth charting, application of topical fluoride, and place and remove dental dam
There are no education requirements for a DA in the state of Texas, however, to be an RDA, there are several requirements including BLS, high school diploma or GED, and a technical education in the field.
