it is important to identify the narrative voice in a work of literature as either reliable or unreliable in terms of thematic meaning because when there are significant events that occur, you want to make sure that you understand that an unreliable narrator may be biased and tell it more from their opinion/point of view, rather than the full truth. When identifying a theme with an unreliable narrator, you want to Make sure that you are reading between the lines to only outline the facts. On the other hand, a reliable character will tell the facts so that the reader knows the whole truth and can view the story's events with a clear, non biased view.

This is because with a unreliable character it can lead to a underlying meaning that would not be found without it. Also because of reliability it can dictate how the reader perceives the character and why the character or narrator is reliable or not through meaning of a backstory.

It allows the reader to get a full sense of how to interpret things the narrator is saying. This also gives insight of the type of person the narrator is.

Self-truth, or what the character believes, can vary from what is real and what is not. While one is talking to themselves, they may be biased and caught in their ways. That applies to Holden in this story, his perspective is skewed because he sees the world exclusively from his lens - and so do we, as the readers. We consume what he describes to us and must depend on him for answers despite the possibility of his word being unreliable. The way Holden speaks is extremely important for how the story unfolds. He may be speaking his mind, but that doesn't necessarily indicate what he's saying is ultimate truth.

If the the narrator is unreliable they could show bias or not explain things as how they actually are. This could cause the reader to see things in a different then they actually happened.
