As an Indian, health is really important to me. It is more than just the absence of illness; it is a condition of complete well-being that includes bodily, mental, and spiritual harmony. Our ancient traditions, such as Ayurveda and Yoga, have instilled in us the notion that health is a comprehensive balance. It is about feeding the body properly, developing the mind with awareness, and cultivating inner calm. In India, health is a self-discovery journey in which the individual connects with their environment, community, and inner self to live a fulfilling life.

As a healthcare practitioner student, Practise Point 8 resonates with me because it emphasises the vital role of efficient communication when working with interpreters to bridge language barriers in patient care. It recognises interpreters' various working styles, particularly spoken language interpreters, who frequently utilise the consecutive mode. I appreciate the necessity of speaking at a moderate pace and including pauses in my communication to facilitate proper interpretation and equitable care. This approach is consistent with cultural competence and patient-centered care concepts, emphasising the importance of clear and respectful communication in creating trust and providing high-quality healthcare to all patients, regardless of linguistic background.

Impact of social determinants on Migrant/refugee in Australia by WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) list of socioeconomic determinants of health presents particular difficulties for migrants and refugees in Australia.

1. Education is important; Refugee students, on average, have larger educational and support demands than most other recently arrived migrant students. Prior to their arrival in Australia, the majority of refugee children and young people had disrupted or inadequate education. Some have limited literacy abilities in their first language and, as a result of their experiences, may have significant health concerns, including mental health issues. (Department of Education, Multicultural Programs. (n.d.). Supporting refugee education. https://www.roads-to-refuge.com.au/refugees-australia/supporting-education.html)

2. Income and social protection are inextricably linked; Income and social protection are inextricably linked; many migrants and refugees work in low-wage occupations and face economic insecurity. This has an impact on their capacity to obtain healthcare and acceptable home.
(Poverty and income inequality among migrants and refugees - Australian Institute of Family Studies)

3. Another issue is food insecurity; cultural differences, dietary limitations, and low financial resources can result in poor nutrition. These socioeconomic variables highlight the need for comprehensive policies and support systems to address the specific health disparities faced by Australia's migrant and refugee populations.

Mental health is an important component of an individual's total well-being, covering emotional, psychological, and social health. Pre-arrival trauma, such as experiences of violence and persecution in their home countries, can have a significant impact on refugees' mental health. The difficulties of resettlement, such as language problems and housing insecurity, increase mental health issues. These events can lead to disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Governments have a critical role in addressing refugee mental health by facilitating access to specialised services, raising awareness, and including mental health care into the overall refugee resettlement process.
(Mental health » Australian Refugee health.

As a follower of the Hindu faith, I find great meaning and guidance in its teachings. Hinduism, one of the world's oldest religions, has a diverse set of beliefs, practises, and traditions. It emphasises principles such as dharma (moral path), karma (law of cause and effect), and moksha (freedom from the cycle of rebirth).
The various deities, such as Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and other goddesses, each symbolise a different facet of the divine. Hindu rituals, festivals, and meditation practises are important for spiritual development and provide a sense of connection with the divine. This ancient religion continues to affect my beliefs and viewpoint, supporting personal growth as well as a sense of community within the Hindu tradition as a whole.
