By getting out of the way and allowing his or her students to construct their thinking with their own ideas and not ones we plant and fertilize in distinct rows. While the flowers may emerge wild and unrelated, we often find that the garden is filled with delightful surprises and even the teacher learns something new!

Higher order thinking is a critical piece within the Math Workshop. Often there is no right answer, no list of choices, no particular model for thinking a particular way. Students must use what they already know and construct new thinking in order to reach a better understanding or to solve a particular problem. A bit of gray is sprinkled onto what may first be perceived as black and white. This discourse opens up all sorts of possibilities in the minds of students that may have otherwise not been tapped.
