One of the dances from Minangkabau tribe is, Piring Dance or Plate Dance. Piring dance is originated from Indonesia and brought in to Malaysia. This dance was use to worship the Gods when the majority Minangkabau people were Hindus, Buddha, and etc. Because of this, when it was brought in to Malaysia, they made a lot of changes of movements to avoid from copying the whole Minangkabau original version from Indonesia. For example, one of the new steps they add in is by tossing the plates to dancers. Now, they only perform this dance as an entertainment. This is a fast moving pace dance with the dancers holding plates in their hands, go along by the beating of tambourines and gongs. the beat of the gong is very important because it will guide for the dancers to determine the steps and movements of their dance.

One of Sabah's most well-known traditional dances is the magunatip, sometimes referred to as the "Bamboo Dance." The Murut people, who are mostly from Sabah's rural districts and were historically Borneo's headhunters, execute this energetic dance. The dancers avoid being held by stepping in and out of the clapping bamboo poles during the dance.

The elders of Murut have a legend that states that Magunatip was founded as a joke. The Murut farmers would rest after pounding the paddy by setting the poles on the ground. Then someone clipped the foot of the person who was passing by with the poles. The victims would swiftly lift up their foot in order to prevent becoming caught. Stepping in and out of the clapping poles in time with the music proved to be an entertaining pastime for those involved in this malicious behaviour. Later on, this game changed to become Magunatip, which had music-accompanied.

A group of graceful dancers wearing exquisite traditional costumes begin Magunatip with a graceful dance to the booming melody of a tambor (drum), tagunggak (bamboo instruments) and gong. The Murut warriors, with their ostentatious feather helmet, loincloth, and bark vest, are the most striking feature. They would resemble the terrifying headhunters by brandishing their weapon and projecting a menacing aura. The dancers then form a line at one side of the poles and jump between the smacking poles without cutting their ankles or feet in order to cross the lines of clapping bamboo poles.
