My Attitudes toward Reading and Memories of Reading

My current attitude towards reading is difficult to assess. I love to read, but often find myself hating it when I am forced to read certain books or textbooks assigned for classes. When I first started elementary school, I was thrilled to further my reading ability and get to participate in the accelerated reading program. The AR program was a online system where you read certain books and took a quiz on them online for “points”. At the end of each school year, you could cash these points in for prizes or events such as a school slip n slide, school sleepover, principal for the day, ice cream sundaes, or pizza. These initiatives made reading something competitive and enjoyable. As time passed, however, and I got to upper grades in elementary school and middle school, we were assigned books to read. When this happened, I began to lose interest in reading because certain books were forced upon me and I simply was not interested in them. I began to get assigned so much reading in school, that I lost the time to read the books I enjoyed on my own time, and since this happened, I have lost my inspiration to pick up a book and read.

http://www.bentonsd.k12.pa.us/library/elementary_library/accelerated_reader

What Sticks Out About my Reading Education

What sticks out to me the most about my experiences in school was the lack of choice given to me and my peers when reading. When my classmates and I were younger, we all enjoyed going to the library and picking out a new book to read for the week. However, we lost this desire when books were chosen for us. I remember telling my family I wanted to be an author growing up, but quickly lost interest because I began to have a sense of anger towards reading. It always seemed as if the teachers thought we would learn more if we all read the same book instead of letting us have some individuality and choose books on our own. I will always remember the way that it felt to lose my love for reading, and this is why it stands out so much to me looking back on my education.

https://blog.ed.ted.com/2016/12/08/the-worlds-required-reading-list-the-books-that-students-read-in-28-countries/

When Do I Read?

I find that I hardly ever read anything beyond the screen of my phone, and my textbooks for class. As I have mentioned, I no longer enjoy reading on my own, and this distaste towards reading only grows stronger as I continue my college career because I spend most evenings dedicating hours to reading out of my textbooks and taking notes. I do hope that taking a Literature class will help bring back the love I once had for reading.

https://coachlynnmr.wordpress.com/2014/11/22/college-students-with-adhd-reading-and-retaining-what-you-read-in-a-textbook/

Today, I find myself dreading reading due to the lack of choice that I was given throughout my educational career, and the only reading I ever really do consists of reading textbooks or novels for my classes. Even though I do not enjoy reading, I hope to learn about literature and the concepts related to it in this course in order to be the most effective educator that I can be and inspire my students to have the love for reading that I once did.

https://blogs.brighthorizons.com/familyroom/5-ways-foster-love-reading-young-child/

The first books I ever read were the Patrick series by Geoffrey Hayes. My older brother's name is Patrick, so my mom purchased all of the books for me. I used to love to have my brother read these books to me at night, and read them to myself when I first learned to read. These books are my first memories of reading and helped developed my early love for books. The books also will always remind me of my family.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/210543351299313093/?lp=true

Another memorable series from my education is the Magic Tree House Series. These were the first chapter books I ever read, and I remember being so proud of myself for being able to read them. I used to make it my goal to read a whole Magic Tree House book in one day, and I used to take my Accelerated Reader quizzes on these books to get points. These books helped to develop my reading ability as a child. I worked as a director of a summer camp this summer and it was really fascinating to see that my campers still love these books today.

https://www.christianbook.com/magic-tree-house-books-9-12/mary-osborne/9780375825538/pd/825530

Another book that is memorable to me is Walden by Henry David Thoreau, but not in a good way. I was forced to read this book in my advanced placement literature class in high school and absolutely hated it. I remember having to write several rhetorical analysis essays on this novel, and never truly understood what it meant. This book is one of the reasons why I learned to hate reading because it was forced upon me, and I never liked it.

https://www.amazon.com/Walden-Henry-David-Thoreau/dp/1619493918

Another memorable book from my reading experiences is the Great Gatsby. Although I do not enjoy reading, this has always been my absolute favorite book. My parents bought me a first edition of it for my birthday last year and wrote a message in it to me, and this book will always be so special to me. The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite stories, and is one of those books I could read over and over again and still love.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Gatsby
