One line that resonated with me was when Baldwin stated, "One can be, indeed one must strive to become, tough and philosophical concerning destruction and death, for this is what most of mankind has been best at since we have heard of man. (But remember: most of mankind is not all of mankind.) But it is not permissible that the authors of devastation should also be innocent. It is the innocence which constitutes the crime." I really liked this quote because he really talks about how devastating mankind really is in words of wisdom. He also adds how the innocence is what constitute the crime, I believe he says this to show how the people who are not doing anything and are on the sidelines of the crimes are the ones who put gas on the fire and makes it worse. Baldwin says " For which neither I nor time nor history will ever forgive them" This just gives information that whatever happens in history it will not be forgotten and is not a topic that will just go away overtime. The pandemic and hard economic times make me think about what else America can have in store for future events or for worst. Baldwin also states that, in quote " but remember: most mankind is not all mankind ". J.S

Racial inequality in America right now is not great because they are still racist people out there and there are racist events happening. Evidence that supports this point is the quote "Destroying hundredths of thousands of lives and do not know it and do not want to now it."(Page 5) this shows that racism was hurting a lot of people and it still is.

One line that resonated with me was when Baldwin stated, "The details and symbols of your life have been deliberately constructed to make you believe what white people say about you." This resonated with me because these types of things still happen today. When minority groups are judged or told to change by white people, it usually gets to people more than we'd like because their standards are seen as the most "acceptable", whether its in the media or personal life. This can also be seen in the line, "he was defeated long before he died because...he really believed what white people said about him." Baldwin mentioned this because he had a first-hand experience of someone being defeated by these standards made by white people, which still affect many today. DR

He thinks that America is not going to be peaceful between black and white people. And also it says that '' they are destroying hundreds of thousands of life's without them knowing.'' At the end of the letter it says'' We cannot be free until they are free.'' This is saying that they can't be good without the rest of the black community is also safe. E.C

Page 6/18 and 7/19 . This quote can be related to many people in the black community. Baldwin wants the audience to also think about these issues because they can be relevant in the future." They have had to believe for many years, and for innumerable reasons, that black men are inferior to white men." page 8. For, instance now in 2021, racism is still a problem that we face or always faced in America. Its important that Baldwin has a wider audience than just one person because its not just a personal problem its a world wide problem that is happening all over the world. J.G

Also in quote, "Take no one's word for anything, including mine, but trust your experience, know once you came, there is really no limit to where you can go."

How do Baldwin's sentiments connect with issues of racial inequality today? Baldwin's words connect with our world in 2021 because the crime that Baldwin is talking about in 1962 is still occurring in our present day society. The quote "Your countrymen were not there, and haven't made it yet." is so true because even in this very day, there's people out there who still ignored the crime they keep committing without acknowledging it. In addition, "This innocent country set you down in a ghetto in which, in fact, it intended that you should perish." proves the present day crime. Most non-white Americans have been set down in the ghetto due to the crime of racism. Baldwin finished his letter with encouragement towards his nephew and the rest of the American society that has to deal with the inequality today.

In Baldwin's letter he is taking about how his country/ countrymen have taken away the innocence and lives of black Americans. They don't see the wrong in their doings, because its been going on for as long they can remember. "They are, in effect, still trapped in a history which they don't understand; and until they understand it, they cannot be released from it." Even though the main reader is his nephew, his letter can relate to many people in this world. He is hitting the core truth of racism. White Americans are not caring for the innocence of black Americans, and Baldwin is trying to get his readers to understand how corrupted our society is. "You were born into a society with brutal clarity." Baldwin want to change our society, by bringing everyone to fight together to gain back the innocence and rights they deservers.
That line caught my attention because. He say, please try to remember that what they believe, as well as what they do and make you endure, does not testify to your inferiority but to their inhumanity and fear. It caught my attention since people now believe they are more inferior than others and they forget the humility they had. They try to make people less because they believe they are more inferior but what we really have to know is that We are all the same. No one has to be more inferior than the other is so that you never forget that you also because of several horrible situations but that you managed, It that despite all the bad things you did not forget your HUMILITY.
What does Baldwin say that speaks to you personally- In the text Baldwin says " You can only be destroyed by believing that you really are what the white word calls a n*****" . This really speaks to me personally because no matter what you shouldn't believe what people tell you. Baldwin also states " he was defeated long before he died because, at the bottom of his heart , he really believed what white people said about him" . This also ties to the first quote because It reinforces the belief of not letting people get to your head . - Max M
