My bridge was based on a suspension bridge idea and has distinct Sydney Harbour Bridge vibes going on. It was able to hold 600g but was pretty unstable.

I decided to ask my 7 years old son, Nemith to complete this task. I organised the project area with a range of resources for him to choose from, such as straws, icy-pole stick, kebab skewers, plastic cups. Nemith was able to compete the task successfully and was able to demonstrates critical and creative thinking skills during the project and communication skills. Hope you will enjoy this :) Thank you

I had conducted this activity with my 9 year old daughter, and then myself as I wanted to see how it would be explored from a child's untouched mind. She did quite well with strength, just not design. However, the aim was to hold as much weight as possible, so the aesthetics aren't a priority. I found when conducting this myself, support beams were needed to hold maximum weight. I think this activity is suitable for all ages, as individual ideas can be generated from all different levels.

First round of testing was unsuccessful, but with some discussion and problem solving we decided to cut the straws at the weak point and add some more tape to see if it could be strong enough to hold the cup of blocks. We were so happy with our success.

The straw bridge was an interesting activity as I found the way the items were placed on the bridge depended on whether it would hold it or not, as such putting the items on singular the bridge didn't hold the objects but when I put them all into the ceramic bowl the weight of the objects were held balanced in the middle of the bridge and held up. I also tried a rough design of a large bridge with balanced strength which also held the objects well

This was a great way to learn about design, potential weight load and the potential problems that Engineers face when designing a bridge. I believe this is a great way to help students learn about the types of possible loads. Students will explore the steps that engineers use to design bridges. I believe simply changing the materials like Sellotape to glue has helped strengthen the bridge to the point where it was able to weight bear 1.321g
