I enlisted in the US Navy Seabees after graduating from High School in 1972. After eight weeks of Basic Training in San Diego, CA I was sent to Port Hueneme, CA for Builder “A” School. Upon graduation in 1973 I was assigned to a Mobile Battalion in Rhode Island. Mobile was an understatement ! In addition to Rhode Island I served in Guam supporting an Air Force unit while the Viet Nam War wound down. After that duty I was transferred to Gulfport MS where we trained and provided relief to the civilian communities damaged by floods from tropical storms. After that it was on to Rota Spain to build new housing for Officers and Enlisted men. Upon return to Gulfport I was looking at something jokingly referred to a CIVLANFLEET. It meant I was looking toward becoming a Civilian in the Atlantic “fleet”. In May I was honorably discharged and in September I began my studies at SJU. I graduated in 1978 and for the next 3+ decades I worked in IT until retirement a few years ago. I think fondly of my time at SJU and how it shaped the person I am today. Incidentally I recently became a member of a local St. Vincent DePaul Society and will be part of a dedicated group ministering to the poor.

After I graduated the first time I enlisted in the US Air Force. With bad eyesight I couldn't be a flying officer, and there were not many non-flying officers spots open. With the Vietnam War still raging and having a low draft number, I had to beat the draft the hard way, by enlisting in the Air Force. After I graduated basic training I was sent to England Air Force Base in Alexandria, and spent over 2 very long years there. In 1974 I was sent overseas to Andersen Air Force Base on Guam and was there until I was sent home and separated from active duty in March 1975. When I had separated, I was a sergeant E-4. Since 1975, I have been active in my local American Legion Post and the local fire department.
