Thanks to this helpful tutorial found online, I successfully learnt how to align files in OmegaT:
1. Firstly you need to go to Tools > click on Align Files.
2. Now you can change the language and browse for the documents you are going to use.
3. A window will appear where you can see both documents next to each other. You can decide on the layout, you can for example choose whether you want to hide or highlight tags etc.
4. Now you can start merging the documents together.
5. You can use arrows on the right in order to move the paragraphs and merge them.
6. You go through and line up the source document with the target document. In case you make a mistake, you can move paragraphs back up and down.
7. Once you're done, save TMX in the preferred file.

One of the tutorials I watched during my self-learning MemoQ session. It contained some basic and helpful information about the new tool, for example on how to start a new project, how to set source and target languages (you can have your preferred languages displayed on the top on the list!), how to enter information about the project, how to import the documents (you need to pay close attention to where they are localized so that you know where to look for them). The import itself might take some time, depending on the files size. I also learned how to add the translation memories (you can select them from your computer or create new ones) and the term bases (again, you can use existing ones or create new ones for the purpose of your project). In order to add files to your translation memory, you need to go to Project home, choose Translation memories, right click on the name of the TM you created while setting up your project and choose the Import option. While doing it, remember to pay close attention to the number of entries - when I first imported the files into the translation memory, I did it twice, which I learned by examining the number of entries.
The tutorial itself contained many more steps but I decided to focus here on the ones that I found most confusing during my pre-test in MemoQ.

I found this video very helpful and comprehensive. It's a detailed comparison of the most commonly used CAT Tools, with all their pros and cons. Additionally, I read an article on the subject to render my knowledge more complete.
Through my little investigation, I learned what aspects to consider in the future, when choosing the best program for myself:
- Mac availability (it's my preferred system)
- compatibility with other translation software
- wide range of supported files
- large support community (for example Trados has a very large online support community, with many webinars and online conferences!)
- intuitive interface
Out of all the CAT Tools I worked with throughout the semester, I found Phrase to meet the most of my requirements.

The Cochrane Project was of incredible value to me.

Firstly, it helped me master a new CAT tool. I learn best through practice, so this was a very enlightening experience for me. I worked on a real text, preparing my own translation, which was then to be used by others. I also edited other linguists' translations, using mainly the function of adding comments to individual segments. At times, learning was by trial and error - but I had a solid background, acquired from the preparatory classes and additional tutorials I watched.

Secondly, I learned more about the translator's work in the context of accepting specific assignments. I learned what it means to work under pressure and how to work on translation in a team. In addition, I learned specialized, medical vocabulary, which I'm sure will come in handy in my future work.

I took part in a university project consisting in translating a collection of poems for children, Kto tak szczeka na człowieka? (Eng. What’s that bark in the park?) by Anna Morkisz from Polish into English. My translation got published and I received very positive feedback from the author herself.
