1. DEFINITION OF STORYTELLING

Storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener’s
imagination.

2. WHY STORYTELLING ?

Stories provide opportunities for children to make use of their instinct to ‘go for meaning’. Children are able to work out what is happening in a story by the context it provides and then attach this to the language in it.
Stories provide authentic language which children may ‘pick up’ incidentally and containing natural repetition of patterns and words which help to exposure students to the target language.

REFERENCES :

http://www.storynet.org/resources/whatisstorytelling.html

http://www0.gtcfla.net/cai/jpkcw/jpkcj/gjj_sj/xxyyjxyyj/files/wlxt/Unit%20IV%20Story%20Telling_JA.htm

4. STEPS TO BE A GOOD STORYTELLER

a) Understand your brand and audience; speak in an authentic voice.

 - If you are writing a story for an older audience from an established, dignified brand, a life insurance or financial services company, you would never use phrases like “LOL”, or “OMG.”

b) Get your facts straight with 5 Ws.

 - Who is your story about?

 - What happens in your story?

 - When does your story take place?

 - Where does your story take place?

 - Why did your story happen?

c) The power of specifics, details, and imagery.
 - Describing a specific trait or quality of a character can take them from flat to fascinating, and the inclusion of specific facts can change a vague generalization to a confident assertion. Finally, use sources and expertise to substantiate an assertion. Do not just quote any blog on the internet as the validity of your assertion is proportionate to the expertise of your expert.

d) Show, do not tell
- Let the audience realize something on their own, and not only will they stay interested, but they will be more likely to believe it. You did not tell them, they figured it out.

e) Know the end at the beginning
- Start your story with an outline, a framework of plot points intended to move your story from A to Z, perhaps with some detours and misdirection, but still always moving forward. Sometimes, you do not know the end when you start, but when you finish you must revisit the beginning to ensure you started your audience in the right direction.

REFERENCES:

https://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140405112844-40671440-5-steps-to-successful-storytelling

2. How to know when children are engaged in music and movement in the classroom?

When you see children doing something new, imitate and enlarge upon listening to songs, or acting out a song, it ensures that they are optimally engaged in the music experience. In fact, research shows that infants can perceive the beat more readily if bounced to it. With the variety of active participation activities we experience in class, children stay focused and time flies!

-Sing “Head, and shoulders, knees and toes,” as follows:

“Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes, knees and toes,

Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes, knees and toes,

Eyes, ears, mouth and nose.”

Have the children touch the body part as it is named. You can substitute names of different body parts for the third line, such as “Neck and hips and knees and cheeks.”
Start off slowly and increase speed as you sing it over and over.

Source from: http://www.kellybear.com/TeacherArticles/TeacherTip69.html

-Play calming music as the children first enter the classroom. When all have arrived, have them watch you and copy your slow movements in silence. Breathe deeply, sway, lift arms, relax your body, etc.

-Play “Statues”. As you play music, have the children move in place or if there is space, have them dance and move around the room. Every few minutes, stop the music and the children have to stay still in whatever they were when the music stopped. If they move, they have to sit down and lose a turn.

-Choose music that encourages motion. Start the music and have the
children move around the room to the beat until music stops. Then have them partner with the closest child. Ask a question or name a topic for each child to discuss with her/his partner. For example, “What is your favourite sport?” “Tell what you know about our state.”
