Is it morally correct for us to be on surveillance?

The word surveillance comes from a french phrase for “watching over”. Surveillance is used by government for intelligence gathering, prevention of crime or investigation of crime. Surveillance is also used by criminal organization to plan and commit crimes.Depending upon the circumstances, surveillance can be right or wrong, like for instance, if we are walking down a street, or drinking in our car or just hanging out with our friends, we will find that public cameras are a nuisance which is invading into our private space. So it's basically the government taking our rights if they spy on us. Mainly no one would like their secrets to be known and spread around the inner government privately. On the other side, surveillance has prevented numerous crimes, terrorist activities such as plane crashes, suicide bombings, building bombings, assassination plots of high profile people etc.As you can see surveillance can be both right or wrong depending on the situation .

The government in a democratic state’s purpose is to help the citizens, and be in a position of power to oversee and provide assistance. In a situation of an all powerful leader or government watching us, is that too much? Many would say it is, but the government can do so thinking they are helping, which can be beneficial. But, if a government begins surveilling all of its citizens, the government can also be malicious and have intentions to create a totalitarianistic state. Real life examples of countries who do similar things could be North, Korea, China and Russia. Both countries have told citizens that their actions are for the good of the country, but many of the actions committed are very inhumane.

With technology, there are almost no limitations as to how much the government can oversee its citizens. To learn about you, the government can look through your phone, and that simple check can find anything out about you. Right now, the police cannot search your house, but should they be able to search your phone? Either way both can give you the same amount of information. Technology can also help you track someone through their phone, or through connections to the internet. The most basic use of technology to watch people is have CCTV and cameras set up.

Below is a video which provides an example of information gathering by the police and government.

How far should the government go? Right now, in certain situations the government does use technology to track people or find them because of their crimes. But should people who you only think are suspicious be tracked? Since technology can help you track almost anyone in this day and age, is it okay to track people who are just “shady”? Some would say that is also too far. In reality, this topic is all based on how you think, and how much privacy you think people should have.

If we are overseen by the government and police, crimes will drop and other things may become better, though many other things can change for worse too. Right now, our world is not surveilled and overseen heavily for the most part, but some countries are in situations where the government has no limitations. Usually, countries that have dictatorships, communism in place, or have in the past, observe citizens a great amount. So in conclusion, there are places who have extreme oversight, and most governments have abilities to observe citizens, but don’t as much. In my opinion, the government and police should be able to observe to a certain extent, but not in private buildings like your home or workplace. People value privacy to different extents, so it seems impossible to find a perfect amount of oversight.

How are connections between humans going to change if we all have access to everyone's information and everything that they do? Protection has high connection with ease, individual space, comfort, secrecy, security, indentepency and activities (according to one’s personal Dos and Don'ts). In the general sense, absence of the equivalent would mean the inverse, changing individual to individual. On occasion it might wind up terrible for some to see themselves victimized off their protection/privacy.

Huge businesses such as Google and other search engines, collect and store information whenever someone searches something up. For example, Businesses are keeping information such as your location, how much money you make, name, age, and search history. They will sell this information to other companies so that they can advertise their product to the person. Are Google and other businesses keeping too much information about you? This concept is both a good and wrong thing. This is good because consumers will be presented with what they are interested in from different companies. This is also wrong because people would also hate the fact that someone else is storing information about them and wouldn’t want it to get leaked to companies or people.

There is a video below which goes further in-depth on businesses and information.

In my opinion, the fact that businesses are storing information from many people should come to an end. I believe this because, hackers in the future may hack the information that these businesses are storing. It also wouldn’t be ok if Google and other search engines in the future begin to use this information to sell it to untrustworthy people and companies just to make money. This can lead to a bigger problem as people would know your location and information and use this in a wrong way. This would be taking it too far and shouldn’t ever happen in the future. Many people are already concerned about this issue and I believe businesses should stop storing information as soon as possible so there will be low chances of information being leaked.
