Fredrick Douglass purpose for “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” is he wants to convince his audience that is wrong to celebrate independence while denying freedom to slaves. In the text it states “What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? A day that reveals to him more than any other day of the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim”. This demonstrates Fredrick Douglass believes that celebrating Independence is injustice to slaves because it excludes the fact that slaves are still being treated unequally and still don’t have the right to their own freedom. The text goes on to state “Your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mock... There is not a nation of the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States at this very hour”. This evidence proves the that

The authors purpose for “The hypocrisy of American Slavery.” Is to inform American citizens that they are celebrating an Independence Day, although they have still haven’t granted freedom to slaves I determined this by the statements Fredrick Douglass made throughout his speech. The text states, “To him your celebration is a shame; your boasted liberty an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity.” This explains that to Fredrick and to other slaves, Americans celebrating the 4th or July is unholy of them and a shame. The text also states, “..that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow men...” This shows that slaves aren’t treated equal and the way that they are treated does not symbol independence and they aren’t treated equally. This describes how I am able to determine the authors purpose for “The hypocrisy of American Slavery”

In the text it states “ would you have me argue that man is entitled to liberty”. This shows that the Fourth of July celebration is to represent freedom and independence but slaves are still held captive by owners so the celebration is hypocritical. In the text it also states “ What to the American slave is your Fourth of July ?” This shows how the author felt that Fourth of July was just worthless to African American slave because a day celebrated for freedom is a day that slave cannot enjoy because they are not free. This is the author’s purpose for “the hypocrisy of America.

The authors purpose is to persuade free American citizens the idea that it is wrong to honor American independence if African American slaves can’t celebrate their freedom as well. The text states, “What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him more than all other days of the year, the gross injustice and cruelty...” This shows that, to slaves, the Fourth of July means nothing but cruelty because whilst every citizen is celebrating their freedom, slaves aren’t but instead remembering that their basically no one. The text also states, “To him your celebration is a sham...” This shows that American citizens celebrating their independence is wrong since, to the slaves, is a sham and bad. So, the authors purpose of the text is to pursued to American citizens that it is wrong to celebrate Americans independence and freedom of the slaves can’t be free and celebrate it as well.

The author's purpose is to persuade free American citizens that is it wrong to celebrate independence while slaves aren't free. This is shown when Frederick Douglass says, " What to the American slave is your Fourth of July?...the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him your celebration is a sham..." This quote demonstrates how Frederick Douglass believes that the Fourth of July is a fake celebration, and that although it celebrates independence, slaves still get treated unequally. Douglass continues to state, "Your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mock...are to him mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy-a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation of the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States at this very hour." This quote explains how Douglass believes that the United States are guilty of slavery which he believes to be a terrible disgraceful crime. It also further explains how he believes that the Fourth of July celebration has heartless rejoicing, proving that the celebration is a sham, or fake. In conclusion, in the speech "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery, July 4, 1852", Douglass' purpose of writing it was to persuade free American citizens that while the cruel acts of slavery are going on, the Fourth of July should not be celebrated.

The authors purpose in "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery" is to persuade the free American citizens that they shouldn't celebrate freedom and independence day when there were lots of African Americans who were not free. In the text it states, "What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him more than all other days of the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him your celebration is a sham;..." This quote indicates that slaves see Independence day as a cruel day where independence is celebrated yet slaves don't receive any independence. The text goes on to say, "There is not a man beneath the canopy of heaven who does not know that slavery is wrong for him... There is not a nation of the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour." This quote demonstrates that Frederick Douglass is trying to explain that everyone knows slavery is wrong but it's still committed. It explains that America is wrong for celebrating independence when they do so many terrible things to slaves, let alone not letting them have independence. This is why the authors purpose is to persuade Americans that celebrating independence is wrong.

The text states, "What tot he American slave is Fourth of July? A day that reveals to him more than all the other days of the years, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim". This evidence supports the that Douglass thinks celebrating Fourth of July is useless if ti doesn't have a meaning to it ,since there are thousands of slaves treated like animals on Fourth of July rather than celebrating their freedom like their other fellow white brothers. The text also states, "Your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless ; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mock". This evidence shows how seeing all these people celebrating and singing the songs of equality, and saying they are all free is just a white lie everyone can see.

Douglass’s purpose for creating “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” was to convince his audience that it is wrong to celebrate independence while denying freedom to slaves. This could be shown when Douglass states “What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him more than all other days of the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.” This shows how the Fourth of July is a disgusting celebration to Douglass. This could also be shown when Douglass states “To him your celebration is a sham”. This shows how Douglass is trying to persuade the reader that the Fourth of July is and American holiday built on lies and hypocrisy. This shows how Douglass’s purpose for creating “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” was to convince his audience that it is wrong to celebrate independence while denying freedom to slaves.

Douglass' purpose of creating "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery" is to persuade free American citizens to see that slavery is wrong. The text states, "What! Am I to argue that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hint them with dogs, to sell them at auction..." This shows that Douglass wants to persuade free American citizens to see slavery is wrong because of the way the masters treat the slave people treat the slaves horribly and how he is surprised that he even has to explain to the people that it is wrong. The text also states, "What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him more that all other days of the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim." This shows that Douglass wants to persuade free American citizens because he showing that the slaves are victims of injustice. Altogether, Douglass' purpose of creating "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery" is to persuade readers to see that slavery is wrong.
