         <description><![CDATA[<div>Everyone in the ward believes the narrator, Chief Bromden, is deaf, so when he actually wants to talk and rebel with McMurphy, he is hesitant. He thinks if he shows he can actually hear, the staff will figure out he has heard all of their secrets, and punish him. He is torn between doing what is best for him, and doing what he knows is morally right. He does eventually talk at the end, making the choice to help McMurphy.</div>]]></description>

When he was in the army, other people didn't know how to interact with people that looked like him. This took a toll on him, and he has been so beaten down, he doesn't see himself as big anymore.          <description><![CDATA[<div>An obvious theme running throughout the novel is rebellion, with McMurphy fighting against the Big Nurse at any opportunity he gets. He hates how the men are treated on the ward, and tries to change things for the better by fighting her. Fighting back also rallies the other men, as they are more confident with McMurphy around, and see him almost as a god.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The fog is all around Bromden in the beginning of the book, but as the story progresses, and Bromden starts to fight against the Big Nurse with McMurphy, the fog lifts, then stops soming altogether. McMurphy is able to pull the men out of the fog, showing them the reality of the situation they are in.</div>]]></description>

Bromden often slips into the fog, and away from what is happening usually when he takes medication, or when he is scared, sort of like a coping mechanism. Bromden is an Indian, and later says that the other men in the army with him didn't know how to act around someone that looked like him. Society began tearing him down, as many people believed that he couldn't speak English, or that he was too stupid to understand what they were saying, so they just ignored him.</div>]]></description>

He cannot understand why someone would do that, and says they would be fine outside, but Billy responds by shouting that none of them have the guts to.
