It was a very timely visit.

The biggest take aways for me were:

Similar to Liam, the music made so much sense for transitions - think it will be something we will try.

I was relieved to hear that they operate as single cell for a term. As this is very much how we have begun to operate. With the idea of looking at what it looks like to be a collaborative student learner.

I was concerned about all the talk about student agency and the lack of talk about student collaboration. So this is something that we will need to make sure we look at as we move forward. It is easy for us to teach collaboratively and less easy to identify what this looks like for students.

I loved their planning but it looked very complicated, I found the idea of colour coding really helpful and it brought home to me how important systems and procedures are.

Great to get the opportunity to talk to others, here some great ideas, come away with things to think about and realise that it is all about having a go...

My biggest take away was…
I also liked the idea of music as transitions, and the chance for it to allow students to have more responsibility over themselves in transitioning - I know we definitely have students in our class who need that extra minute to gather their thoughts and then get going. I also liked the conversations about collaboration in the classroom and how even just the teachers modelling collaboration can have a positive impact.

My biggest surprise…
Was how often they are changing up their systems in the classroom - I like this idea of trying new things to try and appeal to as many students as you can. It definitely makes me feel better about changing things up as we need to.

I am going to change as a result…
I think there is a lot to think about after this question/answer session and different things will apply at different times throughout the year. I like that we are on the same track as they have been with the whanau classes at the start of the year, and I think we will slowly incorporate more collaborative tasks as we go. I like the idea of introducing more student agency, and I think this might flow on from some of the growth mindset talks…I think we will try and take things slowly though and change little bits at a time.

Really enjoyed this PD - it felt like really relevant advice/sharing of ideas!

My biggest takeaway was the idea of using music to support transition times. Used it informally today to break up meetings with small groups (just some quiet background stuff) and I could see kids processing the change over without the verbal cue.
Using colour coding to support kids understanding of a quite complex daily plan is something we'll look to use moving forward too.

My biggest surprise was hearing that the year begins with teaching single cell to support relationship building before moving into a team-based approach. It did have me re-considering the speed at which we are spreading the kids throughout our space, but has also helped to reaffirm some of our decision making.

I am going to change as a result...
Bringing a greater element of play into the way we transition kids through our space. It gets both tiresome for teachers and kids constantly giving verbal cues that don't support kids to be independent in their self management. Music will be a good start.

Thanks guys! So appreciate your time :)

My biggest take away was the importance of taking things slowly but also being willing to experiment and try new approaches. I wonder what impact this has on the students?

My biggest surprise was that the classes operate as a single-cell for the first term. Do the teachers have an idea of what sort of culture they are heading toward in term 2? Are there things they do in their whanau specifically to prepare them for merging with other classes?

I am going to change as a result…develop a set of non-verbal cues to aid in classroom transitions rather than rely on my voice all the time.

My biggest take away was...
Definitely liked the music for transitions. But another take away was the way they taught agency. This being through having broken down statements for each area and then the discussion and reflection on these daily/weekly.

My biggest surprise was...
Again similar to others, it was the way that their classes operated as single classes for the whole of term 1 before being collaborative. I don't think this could have even been an option in our space and I also am not sure I agree with the theory of students needing to attach to one teacher. Couldn't having three different teachers who different students can connect to be a benefit of an ILE?

I am going to change as a result...
For PB4L and our KC focus I want to use break down our current rubric to create statements that we can daily discuss, create whole-class goals on and then reflect upon.

This was a great session to get some good ideas and just reflect on how things are going. Thanks!

My biggest takeaway was the music for transition, and although I am unsure as to whether this would suit this age group it would certainly be a great thing to trial. I also liked how the planning that was shared with students was colour-coded for the teacher that would be taking that particular group/session.

My biggest surprise was the fact that they stated it is better to start as single cell units for a whole term before getting into the whole class stuff. I have found that Siobhan and I have been a real mix of whole class - single cell, and it has worked super well for us. I think that having a two-class space as opposed to a three-class space has certainly allowed this to work ore easily, though.

I am going to challenge myself to keep trying new things/ideas as a result. When something works, it is really easy to get complacent and stick with that, despite the fact that another way/idea might work even better for you. These guys change a lot of things all the time and it seems to keep their room fresh and ticking over. I am looking forward to the challenges and benefits of this year.

My biggest take away was the music transitions, and i'm really excited for us to try this out. I think it will make transitions smoother, and make getting the class together as a group more positive in general.

My biggest surprise was also that they teach single cell for an entire term. I could understand operating in separate class groups for a short time, but a whole term seems a bit long. I don't think this could be an option for our space though. I think this would make getting to know the whole class more difficult, and term 2 would then turn into the time for trying out whole class, and mixed groups. I'm happy with how we have trialled our space, and groups and gotten the messier stuff out of the way at the beginning of the term.
