Out of fear of being accused themselves and Satan being alive in the community, friends and family started accusing others. This often happened if someone was behaving strangely, had old feuds with others, or had relations with someone who had already was proven guilty in witchcraft. Another way people were blamed was if they had past accusations upon them. Thus, fear sparked throughout the community when it began becoming apparent that Satan was "active" in heir community. If diseases, bad fortune, and natural disasters occurred, it was also a sign of Satan. Fear truly spread when the Puritans began experiencing a time of trouble.
