"Colonization is a system of power that's based on beliefs of one groups' supremacy over another. In the last 600 years, colonization has been based on the notion that people of European origin had the right to dominate other lands.... [Colonists forced those indigenous to the land] to adopt the colonizer's religion and language, and provide their labor - for free. Over time, many of the colonized internalized the beliefs and practices of the colonizer, and the brutality of the system became obscured... History has been sanitized, and the brutality of colonialism has been erased. This perpetuates the power of white supremacy."

"There will be times when you recognize gaps in your client's abilities, but they disagree with your perception. Often, they'll point to one of two things: either they think there's another gap they need to work on that's more important, or they think the problem is not their responsibility.... One reason why data is so useful is that it helps to bridge an understanding between our own perception of our abilities and reality."

Rosenberg didn't believe in a hierarchy of needs but as constellations of needs.

Figure 7.1

All of our needs matter, Rosenberg taught... NVC teaches that we're all just doing our best to meet a need. Some strategies are effective and skillful, others are less effective and less skillful. This is where emotions come in."

One reason why learning is uncomfortable is because we'll feel regret. But we can learn how to experience discomfort, and guilt and sadness and anger, and not let those emotions keep us from looking at what we need to look at. We won't transform our schools and create equitable organizations without attending to emotions - because we are humans and humans have emotions - and emotions can be our friends and partners on this journey. Even the hard ones, even anger and regret and sadness. Because they can remind us of who we want to be, and how we want to be treated, and of the hope we have for our world."

What if parents provided feedback to teachers on how they perpetuated white supremacy or acted on unconscious bias? Or on the inclusivity and diversity in the curriculum? Or on the range of depiction of people of color in the curriculum? Or on how the strengths and beauty of a community were included, highlighted, and celebrated? What if we listened to parents talk about their own experiences as children in schools? What if we listened to parents' anger and sadness? What if we - all of us who work in or with schools - took collective responsibility for the crimes and transgressions of our educator-ancestors, even those with whom we disagree? What if we apologized and sought forgiveness on their behalf? While we may have deep disagreements with what some of these earlier educators did, we have chosen to work in institutions that closely resemble those earlier ones. We are part of systems that hurt people. How do we heal from that history?

"I appreciate when white colleagues speak up and say something about racial inequities. But to complicate things more: Sometimes I don't want white people to speak up and say something - not when it feels like they're saying something because they think that I won't be articulate in speaking up, not when it feels like they're speaking up to paternalistically care for me, and not when it feels like they're speaking up so that they'll get Brownie points for being a good white ally. But when that happens, if I have the energy, I'll describe how I'm experiencing their behavior in that moment. I'll remind them that intention and impact are different, and I'll nudge them to unpack their deepest intentions."

Key idea: "When we experience cognitive dissonance (a conflict between what we hold to be true and new information), we are likely to experience fear, which causes our brain and mind to respond protectively in an attempt to preserve our psychological sense of self. So, if someone feels like you're attacking their beliefs, they'll armor up to protect those beliefs - especially if the beliefs are tied up with their sense of self and identity. Our mind experiences a threat to identity just like a threat to our body. Our neurological and physiological response to perceived threat makes the belief get stronger and more entrenched. This is science; we can either fight it or work with it."
