This element is extremely important across all types of music, because I feel that the idea of closeness establishes a sense of unity and expression that promotes or emphasizes the meaning or the beauty of a song. I personally believe that all music inherently has a purpose-- and closeness emphasizes this purpose. I do agree with Ratcliffs arguments, specifically his thought that closeness provides a sense of comfort for the listener and for the musicians-- because I typically feel comforting feelings when I listen to songs utilizing closeness.
