Also when the Black Man story comes up, it represents the darkness and evil people think they see in Hester's sin. The A is the mark that will forever hold the "awful" act she did.  On the other hand, the sunlight shows the light of innocence in and good. Hester tells Pearl to runaway in the sunlight before it's gone. This means that Pearl was born because of the sin, but she personally hasn't done anything wrong. She brings the light to the dark sin of her mother.
