  • Explain the meaning of  title of the book  “Harbor Me”.

    • A harbor is a sheltered place where ships dock and are kept safe from danger. In the novel, the author uses the metaphor of a harbor to suggest that people can be a harbor for other people. Six teenagers are providing harbor for each other in the novel by listening to each other and supporting one another. They have a safe place to speak and are heard without judgement.  

    2. Compare Haley to Holly.  Use a Venn Diagram for brainstorming.

    Haley and Holly are best friends. They are both sixth grade students. They are both strong willed and have strong personalities. Their mothers were friends once. However, unlike Holly, Haley is not growing up  in a complete family with a mother and a father. Haley is being raised by her uncle. Haley has red hair.

    Connection to self-  I know that there are many of us who have memories that are not so nice.  I can relate to this statement because there is probably one or more not so good memories that I've tucked away and try not to think of.  If I think long enough on those memories, then I start to feel bad.

    Haley Anderson, a middle school student takes us through her own reflection of the past year of her life.  Her life is changing as her father now moves back home from prison after eight years.  Her mother had passed away and her uncle was her primary care giver while her father was away.  As she reminisces on her past school year, she learns what it means to be a harbor for others.  Haley had five classmates; Esteban, Amari, Ashton, Holly, and Tiago. Each kid shares their story and their frustrations, from immigration to race to being the only white kid in the school.   As the kids opened up about themselves and tell their stories they learn that they are the harbor for one another. This book gives inspiration and hope not only to other middle school students with differences, but to the rest of the world.  That no matter how different you are, you are needed on this earth and provide a harbor for others.
