This book is a graphic novel and has a moral about friendship. It is a story about a young girl who has a best friend. They do everything together then Astrid joins a roller derby camp. She wanted her best friend, Nicole, to do it with her but Nicole made plans to do dance camp. During this book, Astrid makes another friend. Practices skating more and more because she found it to be harder than expected. She finds her idols locker and begins leaving notes. She asks questions to her idol. Towards the end, she messes up with her new friend. Also, her and Nicole haven't spoken since camp started. At the end, Astrid apologizes to Nicole and goes to her recital. Then she gets the crowd to hold up Hugh Jackman masks to show support and gets Rainbow Bite to hold up a sign supporting her new friend. This is a great book for young girls and their friends

I chose this quote because it means that Max, the main character is getting tired of being king. He wants to go back home. He had fun training the wild things but what he wants more than anything is to go home. He finally realizes that while being king was fun, he wants to go home where he belongs.

Bluebonnet award book 2/3
This is a book recommendation:
This book was very eye opening for me. It will make the reader have prospective into the life of a poor, 5th grade girl, Deja. She just starts school at a nicer part of Brooklyn. She starts figuring out that her teachers are slowing teaching them about 9/11. At home, she has to be the strong one. Her mother works at a diner and her father stays in bed. Deja makes two friends while at this school and they hang out every now and then. Throughout this book, as the reader, i sympathized with her. I felt her hurt and when she discovered her father survived 9/11, i was in tears. This book emphasizes on how one family grieved from that attack. I would highly recommend book because it just brought prospective into my life that i did not think of before. This book makes me want to visit the memorial for myself and to read the names on the plagues of the people who passed. This was a very good read. i read it in two days, i could not put it down. 5 out of 5 stars i would rate this book. On top of being a bluebonnet book, this is also a Coretta Scott King honor book. Excellent book

Bluebonnet award book 3/3
This is a Defining Quote response:
"Moonlight is magic." This maybe a small quote taken from a very interesting book but it is what drives the plot. The witch, Xan, would feed the babies stars whenever she ran out of milk. This baby, Luna, Xan was just mesmerized by her dark eyes and black, curly hair. When Xan ran out of milk, she reached up to feed her stars. Instead of looking up, Xan was looking in the baby's eyes. She did not even realize that the moon's light was heavier on her fingers. Luna ate it up, she ate so much. That is what the title is about and the story. That is why i chose this particular quote.

Newberry Award Book
This is one of my picks, I chose a Defining Quote Response.

“Once upon a time," he said out loud to the darkness. He said these words because they were the best, the most powerful words that he knew and just the saying of them comforted him.”

This quote is important because he was just sent to the dungeon for not being normal. His own father told the mouse counsel that his son, Despereaux, was in the presence of a human. Despereaux was only listening to the kings music because he loved the way he sounded. He was also very much in love with Princess Pea. Anyway, this quote is significant because he read a story in the library about a brave knight falling in love with a princess. When he said those words to himself, he is trying to make himself a brave knight so he can face the rats in the dungeon. It is own personal way to try and not be scared of what lies ahead. It also took him back to when he was reading the book in the library. It was his favorite book.

Traditional Tales 1/2
This is a book review.

This book instantly took me back to my childhood. I remember watching cartoons about Red Riding Hood. This particular book starts with Red at home and her mother is baking custard. Her mother says that grandmother is sick and to take the custard to her. She also tells red not to talk to any strangers. Red agree and heads to grandmothers house. Along the way, Red runs into a wolf. Now she knows she is not supposed to talk to strangers. This wolf however is a very smooth, charismatic wolf. He talks Red into escorting her to her grandmothers house since she is alone. He does this so he can eat her and her grandmother. As Red is picking flowers, the wolf sneaks onto grandmother's house. He eats grandmother and waits for Red. When Red gets there she asks "grandmother" why does she have big eye, and arms. Then ask why big teeth and the wolf replies with "better to eat you with", then eats Red. As the wolf is napping, a hunter overhears the commotion and kills the wolf. This frees grandmother and Red. This taught Red not to ever talk to strangers again.

The king takes the girl into a room full of straw and tells her to spin the straw into gold. While she is in the room she begins to weep because she cannot spin the straw. As she is weeping, a strange little man appears and makes a deal with her. He spins the straw into gold. The king is impressed and takes her to a bigger room filled with more straw. She weeps again and the man appears. They make another deal and he spins the straw in to gold. Again, the king is impressed and takes the girl into a bigger room. When the man appears, the girl has nothing to give him. He then makes a deal to give him her first born child. She agrees and the king makes the girl his queen. He told the story of what really happened. Turns out all he needed was a cup of sugar from the pigs. He did blow the houses down but that is because he had a sneezing cold. When he blew the 1st two houses down, the pigs were already dead, so he ate them. Then the last house, he started sneezing and about that time, cops showed up. Well since he ate the two pigs, he was arrested. All because he needed sugar! Can you believe that?

Pura-Belpre Award Book
This is a Book Review Response.
The Dreamer is a book about a young boy who is conflicted about how to please his father and how to be himself. The book starts out with a introduction of Neftali and gives us an insight to his amazing imagination. He is stuck in his room because he is badly sick. Neftali was working on math and he imagined the numbers flying off the page. Throughout the book, his father was so strict on him and his siblings. His step-mother was his safe haven. He looked up to her, especially because she would have to watch the children when Father would leave to work on the railroad. Raymond was always mad at his father. All Raymond wanted to was to become a singer but his father did not want him to pursue that career. Father wanted his children to become doctors or dentists because that would mean they would not have to suffer financially. Father would often bring home his friends for a dinner party and would be so embarrassed if the children did anything against his rules. One day, Neftali was well enough to go with his father to the forest. He collected many treasures in the forest and followed all of father's rules. While Neftali was in a daydream, and when he came back to reality he thought father called for him. He was nervous because Raymond told him to follow all the rules or
Father would beat him. When Neftali got back to the train, he was carrying all of his treasures and Father's workers started laughing. This really embarrassed father. As the years progressed. Neftali found a way with words and started working for his uncle's newspaper business. After a meeting with people who are being forced off their homeland, the business was caught on fire. Watching his uncle's passion for writing about these people's lives. Neftali wrote a article and started writing poetry. His father was not thrilled so Neftali left home for college. He went under an alias so he would not bring shame to his father.
This book was such an interesting read and it is a great story about how a young boy stayed true to who he is. He did not changed and become a doctor for his father. He became a poetry writer and did what he wanted to do.

Realistic Fiction Book 1/3
This is a Book Recommendation.
This book is perfect for any kindergarten classroom. I was personally read this book in my kindergarten class. My teacher used different voices and actions for the characters. This particular book has been a favorite of mine since kindergarten. I have read all the Junie B. Jones books because they are so relatable as a young student. This book shows Junie B. nervous to ride the bus because it is smelly. Then when she is picking a char, she loves the red chair because it is different. Then she is disappointed whenever someone gets it before she could. Then it is more relatable whenever Junie B. hides in the school and plays in the nurses office. As a student, the nurses office is a wonderland of cool instruments and gadget. This whole book is just an entertaining read for young children at reading time.

Realistic Fiction Book 2/3
This is a summary response.
This book starts off with the grandpa's grandkids visiting him. He tells them stories about the good ole days and takes them to the attic. Grandpa moves passed Grandma's clothes and finds a brown trunk. He digs through the trunk and finds his old tap shoes. He also digs out some hats and canes. Grandpa put on a show for his grandkids. He was just a tapping and singing. He was like a child in the candy store. He danced and sang just like he did. Grandpa even did a grand finale for his grandchildren. Even though grandpa misses the good ole day, he would not trade spending time with his grandchildren for the world.

Historical Fiction book 2/2
This is a Letter to a friend response.

Dear Clayton,
I just read "The School is not White" by Doreen Rappaport and it was so heartbreaking. It was a good book. It was about an African American family, the parents sent their children to an all white school. The parents wanted the absolute best for their children and the resources the white school had were great. Each day was miserable for the children. No one talked to them and no one was even nice. They endured this torture every single day for years. Their daily courage did not go unnoticed They graduated and other african american families started attending this school as well. It was a sweet ending to a torturous beginning. I could not imagine being in their shoes. I am so glad we do not have to worry about this topic any more these days.
I hope you're doing well!

Love,
Lauren

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss

Fantasy Book 1/2
This is a book review response.
This is a classic children's book. It has been told to most children. It has been made into two movies so if they have not read the book then I'm sure children have seen the movies. The Grinch absolutely hates christmas and has a very small heart. Since he hates christmas so much, he comes up with a way for Christmas not to come. He dresses up like Santa Clause and makes a sleigh. He goes to every house and steals their christmas gifts. He steals everything christmas related. He gets caught by Cindy-Lou Who but lies to her and sends her to bed. At the end of his night, he takes his sleigh full of the who's possessions and takes it up to the mountain. The grinch waits to hear the people cry but instead they start singing. The grinch figures out that christmas does not come from the store but it is something more. His heart grows three sizes and he takes the Who's belongings back to them and he even cuts the roast beef. Such a classic christmas book.

Poetry 1/2
This is the last of the required responses. It is a book review response.
This book is about a cat who wears a hat and comes to the house of Sally and her brother. The cat came in and started making a mess. The whole time, the fish kept telling the cat to leave. The cat would play a game and it would make a bigger mess. He even brought in a big, red box. Inside were two little people. Thing 1 and thing 2, they played games and flew kites. This just added to the huge mess. They kept playing until the fish saw Mother walking to the house. The cat left and left a huge mess. Then the cat came back and cleaned up the huge mess. Then the cat and the things left. Right about the time Mother walked through the door. The children had no idea what to say to her. This book is a childhood favorite of many children. It is a personal favorite of mine. I loved reading this book with my mom and then the movie that came out was a hoot. Every child should read this book at some point.
