" He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue- but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. The once occasion huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror."

The author is trying to add suspense since the way Usher is acting is like a madman with no clue to what he will do next.

In the house, the narrator feels very uncomfortable around him. He feels that the house is alive, where the walls are filled with history and could potentially attack at any moment. Usher also is going mentally insane and is having trouble coping with the death of Madeline. During this time, he goes to read books to calm himself down, remembering his favorite books to read along with Usher. Later on, the narrator helps Usher with the coffin of Madeline down to the vault.

The vault, just like the house, is dark, eerie and creepy. After bringing down the coffin, the narrator looks inside it and sees the face of Madeline being very similar to Usher. They screw down the coffin and leave to go to the upper part of the house. Already, Usher suddenly regains his mental health and becomes more gleeful. The narrator is in awe and realizes that something has really changed Usher for the better. After a couple of days, the narrator himself feels these same emotions, with the sudden surge of excitement piercing through his heart, causing him to panic.
