Child development refers to the biological & physical growth of children. To break it down, there are four main domains under child development which include physical, cognitive, social & emotional and language & communication.

Physical domain consists of factors such as touch, smell, sound & bodily awareness.They develop fine motor skills such as kicking a ball, clapping hands or waving their arm. Cognitive domain is the ability to mentally process information which is to think, reason and understand what happening around you. Social & emotional domain whereby they learn to regulate their emotional state and read social cues of others. Language & communication domain is the ability to express their & other peoples need and to come to a discussion.

The four aspects of language development are:

- Phonology

- Syntax

- Semantics

- Pragmatics

Periods of development

1. The prenatal period: from conception to birth

2. Infancy & toddlerhood: from birth- 2 years

Dramatic change in motor skills

3. Early childhood: 2-6 years

Refinement of those skills; motor, moral

4. Middle childhood: 6-11 years

Rule based, improvement in academic & social skills.

Develops empathy around this period.

Imagination & creativity

5. Adolescence: 11-18 years

Physical changes; puberty.
