𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 is an iconic surrealist piece because of it's dreamlike qualities. The clocks are melting and losing purpose, much like how the passage of time feels in dreams. Ants are seen on one of the clocks, which represents the decay of time. This also questions the existence of time as a concrete thing that is able to be measured with a clock, when really it is more complex and abstract.

𝘚𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 showcases the fragility of reality, as the face is completely being held up by crutches. This is an example of surrealism because it questions what reality really is, as well as exploring the realms of dreams and sleep.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘢𝘳 reflects the anxieties of war by making many faces within each other, all of which look worried and ghoulish. This is an example of surrealism because it taps into the unconscious mind and the pure fear that resides there. Surrealism was different than other art movements because of the automatism that came with it. Because surrealism focused on the unconscious, automatism gave up artist control and planning of the painting, instead they give up control in making the art.

Because of the First World War, man's innocence is gone and can never come back. After the cruelties of the war -the destroying of the environment, machine guns, and poison gas- the world has become tainted and the innocence that once was is extinct.
