What is Netiquette?

Netiquette is the appropriate and acceptable way of communicating online. Practicing netiquette is extremely important because online information is commonly misinterpreted since one can not see or hear how the other person is speaking over the internet. Proper netiquette guides online communication by creating simpler language to understand and interpret. Learning and practicing netiquette at a young age can benefit students by getting them in the habit of proper communication and use of the internet which will ultimately keep them safe online. This will also be beneficial for them to practice this now therefore in the future they will have expertise in netiquette for future experiences with jobs and school. Following netiquette will help us as professionals in developing positive online relationships and concrete reputation in our careers.

Netiquette #1 Express your opinions using appropriate and respectful language.

It is very important to make sure you are expressing your feelings and thoughts in a way that should not offend the other person online. Be careful with the use of language you use. For example, there should be no curse words or harmful words towards the person on your post. Stray away from using all caps in your writing, for it may seem like you are yelling.
I find this netiquette to be important because we are living in a time where we can openly express our opinions for millions to view. Which is why we should do so in a mannerly way. In a classroom filled with students who are growing and constantly changing their mind, you will come across some disagreements. Therefore students need to learn how to communicate their disagreement online in a respectful way.

This netiquette explains the importance of being respectful to others while communicating online. Once people begin to use the internet, they will learn how much easier it may be to say what they choose over the internet because it would be easier than saying those things in person. People are more likely to say disrespectful, hurtful and inappropriate things online while hiding behind a screen than to ever say those things to another persons face.
All teachers and students interpret and understand words differently which is why it is so important to be respectful in order to not affect others in a harmful way. It is important to teach students the importance of being respectful online because I believe that teachers should be helping to reduce the amount of cyberbullying that exists on the internet. If students are taught about how terrible the consequences can be from being disrespectful online, then hopefully they will understand how significant it is to follow this netiquette throughout their lives.
I personally chose this netiquette because I know people who have suffered from cyberbullying over the years from middle school to high school. People take the hurtful words over the internet very seriously and it affects all people on all different levels. Some people may not want to go to school anymore or will start to hate themselves because they are taking this bullying very seriously. I believe that all people, including students and teachers, should keep all rude opinions and thoughts to themselves in order to respect the feelings of others.

Netiquette #3 'Be aware of strong language'

This is a crucial part of proper online communication. People have to remember that while speaking online it is entirely non-verbal and very easy to misinterpret. This means that people need to be aware of their use of capitalization, appropriate exclamations and correct punctuation and grammar. While one might think that what they have typed is not offensive and entirely clear, the recipient might misinterpret the language used and take offense. All people need to be conscious of the strong language that is being used and always remember to read what they have typed out loud before sending or submitting anything.
I chose this netiquette because I think that it is very important to be aware of the language one is using. It seems like such a small part in netiquette, but it is actually one of the most important. It's helpful to teach this to students so that they remember that the written word is hard to interpret. This will get them into the habit of being aware of strong language which will help them communicate easier and avoid confusion in any current or future experiences.

The internet is a powerful and useful tool. It allows you to connect to different people all over the world, some good and some bad. This is why you should always practice safety when using the web. Do not post any personal information online, such as your address, mobile number, and password. Do not befriend people you do not know because not everybody is who they say they are. Be careful of the pictures and videos you post of yourself on the web because once it is up, it is open for everybody to see. If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried, leave the website. (Staying Safe Online, n.d.).
I found this netiquette to be important because technology is in our everyday life. I seen children at the age of six that already have cell phones. Which is why we need to teach them safety rules when using the internet. As a future educator, I think having a lesson on how to be safe on the web is a must. Children will always have access to the internet, whether at school or home. We need to teach our students the do's and don'ts of using the web.

In order to teach students about using strong language on the internet, I would have to demonstrate to them the correct and incorrect use of capital letters, punctuation marks, commas, quotations, spelling and grammar. I would create a bulletin board with one entirely correct and incorrect side. This way, when students are struggling, they will be able to look at the board for guidance and assistance. I would also take a few minutes out of everyday and have the students practice proper language use by writing short letters to someone of their choice. This will ultimately help them learn more everyday to be aware of strong language.
