Bleeding Kansas, 1855-1859

Bleeding Kansas an argument over slavery in Kansas. Both pro and anti-slavery forces fought over whether the new state should allow slavery or not. 55 casualties came from the conflict and lead to the start of the war but this is not an official part of the war, as it officially started in 1861. This started a large movement to begin the exit of the confederacy from the United States.

Battle of Fort Sumner, April 12, 1861

The battle of Fort Sumner in Charleston, South Carolina was when the first official shots of the Civil War were fired. The battle started when the Confederate Army attacked a United States Military fort. Though shots were fired, the battle ended with no casualties from either side. Many citizens thought the fires from the fort were a show, because they did not expect a war.

First Battle of Bull Run, August 28, 1862

The first battle of Bull Run was the first battle that resulted in mass casualties from both sides. The Confederate and Union armies met in Mananas Junction, Virginia and fought for the land until one side retreated. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory, which gave the south all of the momentum, and a surge of confidence going into the future. This new confidence led general Robert E. Lee to be more aggressive with his movements and strategies.

Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862

Antietam was the battle in which George McClellan's army clashed with Confederate soldiers in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Confederate soldiers came out on top and won the battle. this Confederate victory put a hold on the emancipation proclamation that president Abraham Lincoln planned to send out.

The Second Battle of Bull Run was a war between general Robert E. Lee's army vs the Union. In the northern parts of Virginia general Lees confederate army stormed a federal supply base that the Union relied on heavily for basic needs like bullets, medical supplies, food, and more. The battle forced general Pope to retreat his union army into Washington D.C. and out of Virginia.

The Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 1863

The Emancipation Proclamation was president Abraham Lincolns abolishment of slavery. Lincoln passed this proclamation in Washington D.C in his office. This was one of the most important parts of the Civil War, as it angered the Confederates so much. The Confederates were now mainly fighting for their right to enslavement and not independence.

Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863

The Battle of Gettysburg was another battle including General E. Lee and his men, fighting the Union army. This war would turn out to be one of the bloodiest fights in history at the time. The battle came with 50,000 casualties which neither side could afford at the time. This fight had the most casualties out of any fight in the war.

Battle of Chattanooga, November 23, 1863

On November 23rd 1863, the Union and Confederate armies fought over the Chattanooga Tennessee area. This battle was a large war on both sides, with both the Union and Confederacy sending many men to the battle. The Union came out on top which was huge for the U.S as they gained control and paved the way for the vital railroad junction of Chattanooga.

Atlanta Campaign, Summer of 1864

The Atlanta campaign was the clash of Joseph Johnston and William Sherman's armies. The was the final piece for the unions victory as they knock off the Confederacy's vital supply lines in Atlanta which gave them basic necessities like food, bullets, and medical supplies. The Union victory forced the Confederacy to give up more of their land that was already being chipped away at all around with victories from the Union overtaking areas.

Surrender at Appomattux, April 9, 1865

On April 9th 1865, Robert E. Lees army of confederate soldiers surrendered the war and accepted defeat. This is the end of the war as the south was overpowered by the Unions technological advances and advantages. Henceforth, this surrender ended slavery for the most part as it outlawed it in all states completely.
