How did you create designs?
First I gathered up a moodboard of Christmas products and DIYs that I loved the look of and felt I would buy or that would look good in my illustrative art style, and then I went and produced a number of original illustrations in fineliner pen with a Winter Woodland theme. A lot of the products I produced were made by replicating these designs in different ways, using the photocopier to produce lots of copies that I then arranged into a pattern, copied, and turned the copies into paper envelopes.
The deer tote bag was made by printing my original deer illustration onto transfer paper and ironing onto the plain tote bag. I made my gift tags by utilising the spare photocopies left over from my envelope templates. I also decorated a few baubles in tertiary colours in a set, with zentangle designs, using sharpie markers.
2. Did you produce the designs that you wanted?
I was very pleased with the quality of my designs, but there were other ideas that I just didn’t have the timeframe to attempt, such as bunting and lino prints.
3. Were you happy with the results?
I was very pleased with the results and felt like they were of good quality.
4. What could have been improved?
If I’d had more time, I would have liked to have explored a variety of more ideas and designs, and made bunting and lino cuts!
5. What did you enjoy about this project?
I really enjoyed practising making things to sell, and the DIY and crafting aspect made it really stand out from the other more traditional kind of fine artwork practised in other lessons and projects. I found it fast-paced and enjoyable, and loved seeing the execution of as many ideas that I could in the short time frame.
6. What did you not enjoy about this project?
It took a little bit of time into the project before base materials such as tote bags and baubles arrived which meant that we were limited with the resources on offer to start with, but I feel like we all made the most of what we had and I’m pleased to have still gotten the chance to make baubles.
Besides from the creative process, I feel like the effort put in and the good quality of the Christmas gifts and decorations produced was not taken into enough consideration by the students running the pop up Christmas shop at the college, and I was slightly saddened and disheartened to see the work that we were all proud of kept under the table in a cardboard box for customers to rummage through.
7. What skills did you improve during this project?
I learned a lot of new skills on how to turn my work into surface pattern, as everything other than drawing the original illustrations was something totally new to me.
8. How could you take these skills into your own work?
I felt like this whole process was very inspiring and generated a lot of ideas for personal projects. Next year, I would like to have produced my own range of Christmas products to sell myself.
