In class on Tuesday or Wednesday, we revisited the timeline that was shown in the cartoon video, "The Articles of Confederation" which was a history of how the US went from having the Articles of Confederation to having the Constitutional Convention. The history shown was how white men came, fought, wrote treaties and documents, fought more, and created more documents. This felt like it was missing many voices and experiences. Students spent the double period examining both primary and secondary sources looking at who else was in the US at the time and how power played out in the colonies / new states.

Goals were to:
-have students see a more diverse history of the United States
-see how power was used to keep some in power and caused others to experience extreme injustice
-learn that the colonists rebeling against the monarchy in England were not the only rebellions happening. Enslaved Africans rebeled against their enslavers, poor whites rebeled against bankers, former soldiers rebeled against the government that had refused to pay them.
-see that women had power in colonial America and then lost much of their power in the new United States under the Constitution.
-that indigenous peoples were difficult to enslave and that Europeans fought to take their lands, including using germ warefare.
-to learn from looking at data, such as the 1790 Census.
-to find evidence from texts.
-to work in small groups.

Students each portrayed students from one of the original 13 states. They had a task to complete that involved procuring goods from other states. They need to figure out how to navigate getting there, paying tariffs and port taxes, how to pay considering the US Continentals were worthless and each state had its own currency and no central bank to set an exchange rate. Students quickly identified that having a lack of a unified government and no central court system to settle disputes made cooperating between the states difficult when it came to commerce. Forgive me for not taking more photos of the students but I was participating and got caught up in the action.
