Slowly get them to realize that doing the practice helps in the long run the first time rather than not doing it, failing, and having to do the practice anyway

I think it might be more related back to our relationship with the students. If they believe we are giving them "busy work" and that we don't necessarily care about their learning, they'll be less likely to practice. If they believe we care about their learning and about them, they might just be more apt to
