They provided education to the rest of the world. The monks also wrote books and recorded events. If it wasn't for these books, we would know very little about what happened during the Middle Ages. Monasteries were like schools provided to the religious ambassadors of the Middle Ages, to gather more information on religion and put them in literature, to pass to the community, and hold onto for the many generations to come.
