I am a young adult I, my identity is more future-oriented as I am primarily viewed as a student. Because I am not married and I am not a parent, I have more flexibility which makes learning more accessible to me as my social role is a student. I am currently working on developing skills for my future career so I have more "teachable moments" to encounter as I get older.

I think that my social role has a huge impact on my willingness to learn. It affects what times I am willing to learn as well as what subjects interest me.

I am at a peculiar time of my life. I’m less than a year removed from being an on-campus undergraduate student, but I still have many of the same school routines as I did this time last year. I am employed full-time, but my job is certainly not the primary focus of my life at this moment. I’m not married and do not have a family, but I will be married by semester’s end and will be in the process of moving soon.

As you can see, I’m in a highly transitional point in my life and it affects my motivation for learning dramatically. I rarely find the time to learn things just because I want to, and I sometimes struggle to pay close attention to instruction that I do not see as applicable to my daily life. Almost all instruction I willingly seek out is future-oriented. It has to do with preparing for the future and life’s many changes.

With that being said, I have found that there is a wealth of material that is designed specifically for people who are on the precipice of major life changes. There is a wealth of information available for those who are preparing to undergo dramatic shifts in their routines, motivations, desires, and daily relationships. I have found that, at this point in my life, I am most motivated by practical instruction that prepares me for the future, and am less motivated by theoretical instruction, although I certainly do find some of it interesting.

My post-undergrad life has been odd. I am still in school, still living in the same house I lived in during my undergrad, around all of the same people, etc. So, I do not feel much has changed. However, I would not consider myself a subject-oriented learner, nor have I ever. I learn very well and effectively when I am placed in a situation where an issue must be solved. As the presentation stated, this is an extremely influential form of learning for adults. I resonate with this because I live my day-to-day life in this manner. I approach each day with the readiness to take down all tasks that I have planned for the day. While this may seem daunting or tiresome, I thoroughly enjoy it!

The adult learning theories we are learning about are so fascinating to me. As an Extension Specialist educating adults, I have used, seen, and thought about all of these theories at some point in my career, however, I didn't really know what I was doing - and I still don't. With that said, I absolutely love it when I am teaching adults about something they have a good general understanding about but are able to learn something new within the concept. As an adult myself, I also revel in the opportunity to learn from others attending the session. This exchange of learning information becomes a peer-peer activity leaning into the andragogy idea rather than the pedagogy notion. I was told once that the reason we have two ears, and one mouth is to listen more and talk less. I have taken this statement to heart and believe it has made me a better specialist by not only listening the needs of others but also listening to others' ideas to address those needs.

I feel like my social role definitely impacts my readiness to learn. At this point in my life I feel like I am in a strange period because I don't know what is to come in the future. I tend to be a more future-oriented learner and want to learn things that will be useful for my future day to day life. However, I am about to go through a lot of change with graduating in May and, hopefully, starting law school in August. Due to this, every morning, although my routine for school stays the say, the unknowingness of my future makes it feel like I am experiencing "impending doom". I love to be able to plan my future and have some control on what I will be doing in a few months, but since I do not know where I will end up, I am at a halt on how much I can plan. Because I can't focus my energy and time into planning my future, I feel like my willingness to learn is actually much higher right now. Along with the fact that I am not married, nor have children (although I do have my two furry children, my kitties), which ultimately makes my availability to learn a lot more open than others. I also feel that because I am pursuing higher education, I constantly have been making the choice to educate myself further.

As I imagine most graduate students are, my life is currently in a transition period. My social role mainly consists of being a student, researcher, and friend. In general, I am a problem-centered learner and learn best when applying the information to "real-world" experiences. However, as I plan to graduate in May, I am faced with the decision of what to do next. Because of this, I have shifted my learning style a bit for the last semester. I'm looking at learning from a more futuristic point of view, with the hope that it will help me decide if I should continue schooling and pursue a PhD or enter the workforce.

My social role has definitely impacted my readiness to learn. I am student, I work basically everyday, and I am also trying to figure out what job I am going to have and where I am going to live when I graduate in May. At the beginning of this semester this overwhelming feeling made it difficult to feel the readiness to learn. However, I started waking up really early and created schedules that made me feel less overwhelmed.

I think your position in any environment subconsciously affects your ability to learn and what learning styles you work with. For example, in a classroom setting, you usually are more receptive to a basic level of learning as it is expected of you to learn. Another example could be a leader of an organization being approached by one of his or her followers with a critique of how some of the day-to-day processes are working. This could be a situation with learning is not a friend for the leader to take on. I think this question has a lot to do with the receptiveness and self-awareness a person has at a given time. Mood and motivation play a big part here in my opinion. For me, I think I have worked through both these examples in my daily life as a grad student and leader on my baseball team. Readiness to learn constantly takes different shapes and forms, but is something I try to approach with a clear and open mind.

I feel that my social role plays a big part in determining my readiness to learn. Like my peers, I am in a period of life where many things are happening at once, but the future is still unclear. I am wrapping up school in the Fall, and that seems to be the only certainty for me now. I am 8 hours away from home, and my lease is up in a year, so there are a multitude of possibilities after graduation. I tend to be a future-oriented learner and find interest in learning skills that will benefit me in a potential job or even just day-to-day life. I feel that my social role reflects that as well as I am a student in a period of transition in life.
