Jessica, your first draft needs more work. First, make it sure to spell-check your words, especially when you use your mobile devices to post your draft. Also, I am not sure what your research question is and what you want to work on. Please make it sure to define CLEARLY the scope of the study and research problem/question you want to find an answer. You will also need more words for your step 1 draft. 350 words for your draft and another 150 words for your reflection. Please revisit a rubric and read carefully for the requirement for this project.

First, knowing the signs of a child or student in a classroom that show signs that something more is needed would be the key factor. Using self judgment before observing child’s behavior would initiate this process. Every kid will have a variety of emotions in a class so knowing what is the actual warning clues that then require additional help is the focus. What is considered an indication of extended expressive behavior to look for with children? Some internal signs might consist of trouble with others, isolation from peers, showing feelings of helplessness, being overly dependent or abusing him/her self. Temper tantrums, conflicts with authority figures, sudden increase in impulsivity and aggressiveness are active signs of externalized problems.(here you need citations for explaining symptoms and conditions) Another area that needs concentration would be child growth and development. Knowing factors that may arise with a young person while they are growing would help the progression. Many kids just need a guide to the right direction when making decisions in and outside of the classroom. If an emotional problem is detected some steps to help will come up. Some ways to help would be helping students establish positive peer relationships, teaching behavior management skills, identifying and dealing with depression and helping students cope with stress. These are just a few techniques that, if applied at the beginning, can prove to be successful in getting concentrated student back of the right track which would lead to an overall productive learning environment. While a student is in school, he/she have so many different areas that are all combined to get through the day. While many techniques are present that add assistance with what could be done to support an emotional child, this subject only gives a few suggestion on decreasing emotional disturbances in a classroom. There is so much that could looked into and research. Although analyzing these concentrations add clarity and help improve approaches that could be taken to enhance a child’s outcome in everyday situations, is so much more that could be studied and test so that benefits could be used.

http://www.ascd.org/publications/classroom-leadership/nov2003/Helping-Students-with-Emotional-Problems-Succeed.aspx

TA Aram's feedback
Jessica, you started a great STEP2. Overall, you did a good job explaining why two disciplines you chose need for solving your research problem. I feel like your section 2.1, justification, can be improved by stating what is your issue that you concern and why it is complex clearly. You kind of started explaining it but I think you could do better on this part. Also, you could do better on the section 2.4 by explaining more detail about why this project addresses an important thing and as yet unresolved issue concerning nature or society.

Even if there is a diagnosis of some type of factors hindering the child successful actions, treatment is very imperative for the child to start showing improvements. When I was at the Friends School of Atlanta Summer Camp doing my site observation I was able to witness a situation where a teacher intervening with a student, who was five years old, using special techniques to calm that student down. She was able to use several methods like giving a fidget and making them take deep breaths to lead them back to a calm state of my mind.( You put the information you observed from the site visit, which is good, but it would be a stronger paragraph when you write some suggestions/discussions you could find from the site visit as well. If a student is coming from a two parent household the odds would increase for them not having any emotional problems while at school. If a kid is coming from a one parent household, the chances will rise due to the fact that the parent has many obligations and probably would not have the amount of time to put in towards the child's well being (be more specific. Providing some examples is always helpful, especially when your next sentence is talking about how this is a huge factor, you need to explain more about how this phenomenon is connected to your problem) This phenomena is a huge factor to determining what is keeping them back and how to help keep the kids on task.

Jessica, you have a good start. For your two chosen disciplines, you started and explained nicely about the ‘child growth and development’. However, I feel like you focused more on the CGD than your second choice of discipline, counseling. I am sure you can find some relevant examples, information, discussions from counseling as well so I want you to think about your second discipline choice more and put insights you can find from the discipline. Second, you nicely put your observation in your site visit and it is well weaved in your paragraph. This can be improved by providing your insights, discussions, or some detailed information about the site. I highlighted and commented in your draft, so you can find where and what you need to put more. Lastly, you may connect tightly about the phenomenon you mentioned and your research problem. Again, you will see my comments on your posting.

*You posted your draft after the deadline, so there will be -2.5 pts deduction.

As I think about the different disciplines and how it potentially is relevant to my problem, several comes to mind. As we look into finding solutions to help certain kids with extra emotional problems calm down, make it through a school day and interact properly with teachers and classmates, we have to narrow down the topic to a smaller group. The first discipline that comes to mind when thinking about kids with emotional problems will have to be child growth and development. This is a very important discipline because it focus on the initial cause for the child to not be able to adapt normally when it comes to requirements at school. Some factors that is involved with this would be hereditary, environment, and social economic status. although there is a chance that some of these have nothing to do with developments emotionally with the kid, it is important to still look into the background to try to find a way that can help a particular child. After gathering information about what could have led to this particular place the next discipline that is important to me would be counseling. Even if there is a diagnosis of some type of factors hindering the child successful actions, treatment is very imperative for the child to start showing improvements. The most simple step would be therapy for that child. Talking to them and coming up with suggestions to help figure out how and why they are having trouble is a good start. Sometimes the observations can help determine if that child may need some form of medication and this can lead to visits from a psychiatrist. Psychologists And psychiatrists are very helpful with kids that need additional help. A routine schedule visit with the child can show them that someone cares and give them the confidence needed to improve their school habits. Also talking to a child and telling them they do not pay attention or they will get in trouble will make matters worse. I read an article that says that shaming a child could affect the more than helping them. Some great suggestions would be keeping calm, making check list, have that child be a helper and not enabling bad decisions. When I was at the Friends School of Atlanta Summer Camp doing my site observation I was able to witness a situation where a teacher intervening with a student, who was five years old, using special techniques to calm that student down. She was able to use special techniques like giving a fidget and making him take deep breaths to lead them back to a calm state of mind. I thought that the way she handled the situation, first by calming him down and second by fixing the initial problem, was a good manner for not making the child feel like they did something wrong by talking to them and letting them express their own feelings. At this camp I witnessed the amount of freedom each kid had to design and control their own projects. I observe many kids engaging and staying focused on what they were doing sample I because their projects gain their attention and they was able to make decisions on their own even the younger ones. This help with the flow of the day. Even though they was able to work on different things for their particular projects it was still a scheduled and structured day. Each child have the right to express their feelings and concerns. After interviewing the director Fiona Thompson and having her explain the freedom of each child has while working, I connected what she said to what I saw. The main factor at that school is letting child work, observe and complete independently. I would like to focus on a target that is more specific which will be keeping the student on task. one phenomena with this problem would be family structure. if a student is coming from a two parent household the odds would increase for them having less, if any, emotional problems while at school. if a kid is coming from a one parent household the chances could rise extremely due to the fact that the parent has many obligations and probably would not have the amount of time to put in towards the child's well being. This Example is related to my problem because if a child is having problems at home most likely they will flow over into I school day. Children are very vulnerable emotionally, mentally and cognitively. In order to help them, especially ones that are at risk, we have to consider home mannerisms. This phenomena and many more like medical treatment and peer relationships are all connected with my research question on how we can keep kids on task by showing that in order to keep a balanced mindset in a classroom, we have to discover ways to group each aspect that contributes to the objective. This phenomena is a huge factor to determining what is keeping them back and how to keep children focused.

Jessica, you did a great job on your draft. As you provided all information required in a nice way, I don’t have much to say for your draft. However, here are some few suggestions for your perfect STEP4 final version. I think it would be good if you can be more specific about your references. For example, you have many good resources on your data table so why don’t you add references in your paragraph? I marked and highlighted on your draft where you need names of your resources. Also, do the same for your play videos. I like your insights from both videos and want you to indicate what video or what scholar did you watch. Finally, you don’t have a reference list at the end. Make it sure to have one for your final draft. If you want to know how to make a reference list as APA style, this website will be helpful. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/1/

Jessica, thanks for your submission. Now that you have almost everything in your draft, we need to upgrade your response to receive a perfect grade! First, make it sure to have 500 words (without the reflection part) in your final draft. If you do not meet the word limit, points will be taken off from your final grade. Second, you need to bring insights from two playposit videos you watched. Like the STEP4, make it sure to name two videos so that we can track/grade what you watched. Lastly, your table needs to have 15 resources and I noticed your table only has 5 resources. Put more resources and expand your table. Also, don’t forget to fill in the blanks in your table. Hope this is helpful! If you have any question, let me know anytime.
TA Aram

Step 5 Revisions

In step 5 we had to look deeper into our sources and see how they relate to our research question. As I took the time and went through some of my articles that relates to some of the phenomenas that are connected to my problem with kids’ emotional status and trying to get them to stay on task I discovered that many factors have to be examined to get a correct approach. Some key elements that are very important while looking for the disciplinary insights into my problem would be family involvement, environment where the kid lives, and the school relationship, especially with the teacher. I was able to find many articles that gave a lot of information to some of these factors that affects a child's emotional state and how to keep them focused. For instance, one article that was by Alter, Peter addressed a very detailed problem that involved students from different grades and how they performed better solving math word problems. Each of the four kids used for the study had some type of emotional and/or behavioral problem that disrupted their focus level required to figure out the work. This particular article concentrated on the school's role and activeness in the child's emotional issues and staying on task. After watching the play posit about behavior and learning disabilities I learned a lot of information that can help with students that struggle with learning in school. Ms. Kathleen Kimball stated her passion with this as well. She gave many resources that are provided that gives kids with emotional, behavioral and intellectual concerns outlets that are used to support them through a school year. One of those resources are IEPs. Individual education plans are designed to help students maintain their skills in a classroom. Each one differs from child to child and consist of plans all the way to useful redirections. This play posit was incredibly important when trying to figure out how to keep some children on task. Another play posit that I gained more insight from was the educational psychology. In this play posit Hanah Goldberg gave details about the “how" and “whys" of learning and the way they relate to a student's learning habits. Educational psychology is important when we think about kids that have an emotional status that can stop them from learning properly. In order to treat a student you will have to know the history and how to engage with that particular child. Their strengths and struggles is what have to be observed in order to provide the best plan for that kid. kn school settings there are many kids that have learning or behavioral problems that are not necessarily hindering them from learning, But being in a classroom where they are not on the same level as other students can lead to other problems. Adrienne Stuckey went into the different levels of special education that is offered for kids and what classes are needed for future teachers that want to be in this field. Special education is an option for kids that is in need of help that isn't offered in a regular classroom. I do agree that each article I chose is somehow connected or can gain helpful insight on how to, not exactly fix the problem but help prevent or help increase improvements if necessary. When looking deeper for an answer on how to fix emotional and behavioral problems with students I notice that it isn't a way to stop them completely. We can look into the causes and come up with more help but this is one thing that will always be an issue and classrooms everywhere.

After completing an in dept research into the understandings of what can assist children to stay on task in a classroom setting that have emotional problem I've gained more insight into how this question can be achieved in many disciplines. There are several aspects that ultimately lead to the root of emotional kids and how they make it through a school day. It is important to remember that each child is unique and cannot be held to other students' standards, whether they are in need of help or is maintaining emotional balance in a class. An interdisciplinary approach towards this topic has influenced my perception positively by directing me to the numerous factors that is needed in order to determine the best solution for redirection with emotional kids. If I'm a teacher in a classroom and I have a student that isn't responding well to the materials first I would need to observe their actions to try to decide if other choices would be a good fit. Understanding the cause of the unfocused behaviors can help me with that. Talking to the child could lead to other obstacles that is stopping the improvements required from a child. As I look at my problem as a whole, interdisciplinary has allowed me to search beyond the classroom setting and discovering many ways to adapt to this particular problem solving. Some things I was able to find helped me understand what could even be done in order to decrease emotional problems. Family structure, environment and family problems play a significant role to a child's ability to achieve requirements at school. If a student is having a rough time at home or isn't getting enough sleep the possibility of that child displaying it in school is higher. All issues doesn't have to be with the child's predisposed issues mentally, intellectually or emotionally. The interdisciplinary approach would definitely have to be applicable outside of a class setting. Even when considering all the factors that could be hindering or influencing each child, when they step into class the teacher has to put all that aside and figure out how to connect with the student during class hours. These are neccessary to help the child learn and interact with peers successfully.

Hi Jessica, thanks for your STEP6 response. We are almost done! I enjoyed reading your STEP6 as I could see your perspectives changing and insights from researching the project. To wrap up your IRP wonderfully, I suggest few things for your final draft. First, don’t forget to have at least 500 words for your final response and additional 150 words or 1min 30secs audio for your reflection. When you write more for your final draft, I think you can focus on how an interdisciplinary approach challenged your bias on the problem. I feel this part can be improved as you already have explained about how an interdisciplinary approach has influenced your perspective and is applicable beyond the classroom. For the part where you explained about your understanding of the problem as a whole, I would like to see more explanations on what your understanding is from this interdisciplinary search, and how you see the problem as a whole and why. Other than these, you did good job!

Understanding the cause of the unfocused behaviors can help me with that. Talking to the child could lead to other obstacles that is stopping the improvements required from a child. An interdisciplinary approach allowed me to not just focus on what is needed in a classroom setting, but it gave me a chance to see various aspects that are just as important. When I started completing research into my problem I was focusing more on a teacher's involvement. Learning about different phenomenas in step 3 really opened my eyes further to the components that are all necessary to get a better connection. As I look at my problem as a whole, interdisciplinary has allowed me to search beyond the classroom setting and discovering many ways to adapt to this particular problem solving. The interdisciplinary searches allowed me to understand that in order to look at the issue you have to look beyond the obvious. Searching different websites, magazines and internet sources allowed me to go further than a classroom perception. I found much material that contributed to my understanding of the importance to find other paths in order to get a full understanding and some type of solution. I was able to find articles that helped me understand what could even be done in order to decrease emotional problems.
