The battle is named after Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts. The Battle of Bunker hill was one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution. Victory at Bunker Hill came at a terrible price for the British, with nearly half of the 2,200 Redcoats who entered the battle killed or wounded in just two hours of fighting. The patriots sustained over 400 casualties. On June 16,1775 American troops learned that the British were planning to send troops from Boston to occupy the hills surrounding the city, so they built earthen fortifications. On June 17, British forces under the command of Major General William Howe (1729-1814) and Brigadier General Robert Pigot (1720-96) landed on the Charlestown Peninsula then Marched to Breed’s hill. Twenty-four hundred British troops advanced up the hill in tight formation. The militiamen, and farmers, waited until the redcoats had come within thirty paces. The British then re-formed their lines and then attacked again. But the Patriot Rifleman of the British forced them to retreat a second time. During the third British assault, the colonials ran out of gunpowder. Peter Brown who served under William Prescott said “ I ran for about half a mile while balls flew like hailstones and cannons roared like thunder.” The British then took the high ground but were too tired to pursue the rebels. British then suffered 1,054 casualties, over twice the American losses. The two armies, American and British, settled in for a nine-month stalemate around Boston.
