What I love about circles is the "How you're ready to learn 1-5". It gives you a great idea how they came in the classroom. Knowing that can definitely help the teacher increase their "number"/feelings and have a better day of learning!

I do enjoy circles, however I also like to use peer mediation and restorative conferencing between the wrongdoer and the others impacted. Once you have shown your students how to do it and are consistent with it, they start to mediate and fix problems on their own and step in to diffuse situations. It is important for everyone to understand what is and isn't okay in a circle setting to create the standards and review them, but then taking that into small groups helps the student who messed up, see what their actions have caused and figure out how to fix it or do better the next time.

I am most intrigued by the RP Circle. I believe using a circle will help build our classroom community and help students feel accepted. Many students do not have a "safe haven" aside from school. A circle will help them build the safe environment in our classrooms and become accountable for their behaviors and actions as they see how it affects others.

According to the video, Circles are implemented for classroom management, conflict resolution, and to involve students in an activity. Just like the teacher in the video, when I had circle time I used a talking piece that went around the circle, discussions were about different topics retrieved from a fishbowl, and I would reflect on what kids had to say. My students and I loved circle time because it gave each student the opportunity to be heard and use their voice, it helped build relationships, and it opened everyone's eyes to what others were going through. I learned so much about my students and they learned many things about me. It was amazing! The students would ask and request for circle time weekly. This year, I look forward to implementing what the teacher did in the video. She had her students close their eyes or look gently to the ground to get them focused and she used the scale of 1 to 5 when students described themselves or how they are ready to learn.

I am amazed at how similar the guidelines of Circle time are to Habits 4,5 and 6. Taking the time to intentionally create a place where barriers can be lifted and students learn to collaborate, problem solve, and understand each other is critical. With building relationships as a major area of focus in our district, teaching students to listen to and respect each other is timely and of high priority. My favorite aspect of the guideline poster is the idea of teaching students to speak and listen from the heart without judgments. I believe students make better choices in behavior and academics when they feel valued, respected, and understood.
